Kind of along the same line, has anyone ever heard of soldier caterpillars (I could be wrong on the name). Anyway, I remember reading about these strange critters. Seems they march in lockstep on branches, one behind the the other, never looking up, never from side to side. Rather like lemmings, I suppose.
In an experiment, a scientist took a large flower pot, and down inside placed some Caterpillar Chow (or leaves, or something). He then started placing the worms on the rim of the bowl, finally putting the last's one head against the lead one's butt (paints a picture, doesn't it?).
Then they were off. Marching, marching, marching, around and around, ceaselessly, endlessly caught in the loop. For days they went, totally ignoring the much-needed food just inches away. At last they began dropping off, one by one, as dead as hammers.
The moral, as it applies to the Pavidians? It should be plain.
Let him who has ears, hear.
