Solzhenitsyn spent some 20 years in Vermont, and frequented Bear Pond Books, which was owned, at that time, by two of my friends. The local "joke" was that because he didn't "reform" after being sent to the gulags the Soviet government decided on a harsher punishment: exile in Vermont.
