I don't cry except from physical pain, but the ending of Amy Hempel's "In the Cemetary Where Al Jolson is Buried" kind of socks you in the gut.

"Flowers for Algernon" by Daniel Keyes. A short story classic, later expanded into a novel. The novel isn't bad, but the short has more intensity and impact, IMO.
