(CNN) -- Nelson Mandela, the revered statesman who emerged from prison after 27 years to lead South Africa out of decades of apartheid, has died, South African President Jacob Zuma announced late Thursday. He was 95.

The former president battled health issues in recent months, including a recurring lung infection that led to numerous hospitalizations.

With advancing age and bouts of illness, Mandela retreated to a quiet life at his boyhood home in the nation's Eastern Cape Province, where he said he was most at peace.

Despite rare public appearances, he held a special place in the nation's consciousness.

Nelson Mandela, Dead at 95

Headline says it all. Kind of literally. I don't have any other details as of yet.

Link goes to the CNN site, and I'm sure they're going to update soon.

MOD NOTE: Merged my thread with Haskins'. Looks like we were of the same mind at the same time.

“For to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.”

- Nelson Mandela

he was one of history's necessary men.

he was not a saint, but he was guided by moral principle, even as he was often fueled by justifiable anger. over time, he became a striking example of reconciliation over division and grace over rage.

RIP

This is making me cry.

I am so grateful that he lived and was able to accomplish what he did.

I found it wrenching how much people were clinging to him and holding on, toward the end during this last period. When he lost the ability to speak, it was clearly time for farewells.

Very very grateful to this being.
