Just found this little gem in the London Review of Books. One of the earliest recorded mentions of football is in a poem by Phillip Sydney from 1580:

A tyme there is for all, my mother often sayes,
When she, with skirts tukt very hy, with girles at football playes

Gives one an unexpected insight into Elizabethan notions of femininity.

The things we learn! Thank you for bringing this to our attention.
On a snarkier note: I'll bet there was a good crowd of spectators for those matches!
"Skirts tukt very hy", indeed.
