Hey Everyone.
Not sure if this has been posted, but...
Has anyone ever submitted to a comic book company like DC, Marvel, Dark Horse, etc. to be offered to have their own comic published?
I have a plot in mind, and will be working on a script soon, but not really sure how to get it to the attention of the above mentioned companies.
Anyone had any experience with them?

Odds are staggeringly unlikely that you'll get anywhere.

Even if you take an established hero franchise and send a sample script, you'll likely as not reach the round file.

If you have your own characters etc., you'd be better employed getting your team together and just making the comic yourself, then subbing that to indie publishers or just printing it yourself (POD isn't as bad with comics as it is with novels).

Have a look through the comic book threads here and you'll find lots of info on doing all of that.

Good luck.

What Word sez is...word.

The comics field is more rareified than movies or TV. Breaking in with a large company strictly as a writer, particularly with your own characters and concepts is extremely difficult.

If you want to investigate the graphic novel or POD route, you can review some of the posts here or...pick this book up next month.

Maybe this is obvious but if you've got an original idea you could try to team up with an artist or team of artists and create a 5-10 page sample mock-up. this is what I'm working on for one of my projects, and having sample artwork along with some spec script pages and a synopsis seems to be what publishers like to see as a sales pitch.

I have actually submitted an original idea to Marvel, but was rejected. They actually state in their guidelines now that they don't want any new character submissions. However, that doesn't mean I'm going to give up, and neither should you if you receive the same rejection.

I've spoke with a few writers who have worked with Marvel, and they say that the best way to get in is to prove yourself just as the other posters on this board have described. Self publish, or get accepted through an indy and sell your book well. Then resubmit to Marvel with an idea for one of their established characters. Hopefully then they will see that you have one under your belt that sold well and they'll take a chance on you. After you're in the door, perhaps then you can submit some original ideas to them, or maybe they'll resign your idea you self published. It worked for Brian Bendis, and I'm hoping it will work for me. My original comic series will be published in Fall 2008. Hopefully, I can keep moving up from there. Hope to see you there.
