Thought it would be appropriate to share some holiday poems (from others). Old favorites, new favorites, ones that made you stop and think, whatever.
I'll start one of my all time favorites (I once had it memorized) and perhaps the most well-known.

The Night Before Christmas

Clement Clarke Moore

'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house

Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;

The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,

In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there;

The children were nestled all snug in their beds,

While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads;

And mamma in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap,

Had just settled down for a long winter's nap,

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,

I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.

Away to the window I flew like a flash,

Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow

Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below,

When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,

But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer,

With a little old driver, so lively and quick,

I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.

More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,

And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;

"Now, Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen!

On, Comet! on Cupid! on, Donder and Blitzen!

To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!

Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!"

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,

When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky,

So up to the house-top the coursers they flew,

With the sleigh full of toys, and St. Nicholas too.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof

The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.

As I drew in my hand, and was turning around,

Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound.

He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,

And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot;

A bundle of toys he had flung on his back,

And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.

His eyes -- how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!

His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!

His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,

And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow;

The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,

And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath;

He had a broad face and a little round belly,

That shook, when he laughed like a bowlful of jelly.

He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,

And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself;

A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,

Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,

And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk,

And laying his finger aside of his nose,

And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose;

He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,

And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.

But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,

"Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night."

Ok, maybe this was a bad idea..no one?

Hmm, here's another one I liked,from the Oxford Book of Christmas Poems;

BC:AD
by U.A. Fanthorpe

This was the moment when Before
Turned into After, and the future's
Uninvented timekeepers presented arms.

This was the moment when nothing
Happened. Only dull peace
Sprawled boringly over the earth.

This was the moment when even energetic Romans
Could find nothing better to do
Than counting heads in remote provinces.

And this was the moment
When a few farm workers and three
Members of an obscure Persian sect.
Walked haphazard by starlight straight
Into the kingdom of heaven.

I honestly don't know any holiday poems, at least none I can think of. I do think it's a good thread idea though. :)

I went surfing for inspiration and found many poems here and here. The second list is quite extensive but unfortunately the index does not include the poet's name, only poem title.
But tomorrow of course we will have the pleasure of many from our own poets. :D
Can't wait.

I know, me either! :D I can't wait to read all those entries.

Maybe I'll surf around and look for holiday poetry too. :)

When you figure it out, will you let me know?
I think part of the problem is that not everyone scrolls down on the main forum. There are so many stickies up there. :)

I don't know many holiday poems. The first one you posted I, of course, know, but that is about it. I will have to go take a look at your links now.

Poems For The Season

Here's a very seasonal poem I happen to include in my list of favorites. Fantastic example of iambic heptameter verse. Amazing, too, since it was written in the 16th century. Anyone else have any favorites?

THE BURNING BABE.
By Robert Southwell

As I in hoary winter's night stood shivering in the snow,
Surprised I was with sudden heat which made my heart to glow ;
And lifting up a fearful eye to view what fire was near,
A pretty babe all burning bright did in the air appear ;
Who, scorchëd with excessive heat, such floods of tears did shed
As though his floods should quench his flames which with his tears were fed.
Alas, quoth he, but newly born in fiery heats I fry,
Yet none approach to warm their hearts or feel my fire but I !
My faultless breast the furnace is, the fuel wounding thorns,
Love is the fire, and sighs the smoke, the ashes shame and scorns ;
The fuel justice layeth on, and mercy blows the coals,
The metal in this furnace wrought are men's defilëd souls,
For which, as now on fire I am to work them to their good,
So will I melt into a bath to wash them in my blood.
With this he vanished out of sight and swiftly shrunk away,
And straight I callëd unto mind that it was Christmas day.

Turnup's Christmas Card

I'm new here, sorry I missed this thread. Here's an original Christmas poem I would share.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y90/clik-it/c313c7fd.jpg

Turnup’s Christmas Card

Recently

The wife was makin’ Christmas cards
To send, come Christmas next
In Turnup’s thoughts, the ribbon box
Was the perfect place to nest

So

He snuck inside the tangled mass
An’ curled up in a ball
This curlin’ took some furlin’
He is chubby after all

When

The wife run out of Elmer’s
She went lookin’ fer some glue
Sure enough she found Super stuff
It was frikkin’ sticky too

Well

You might know the phone would ring
An’ it would be her sister
Yackety yak ‘fore she got back
Turnup woke an’ missed ‘er

Yaaaawwwnnn

He thought he’d check the table top
Fer unattended treats
But what he got, sure was unsought
Stuff was stickin’ to his feets

What th’ ???

He’d stick one out an’ shake it
But when he set it down
Tinsel, glitter and other litter
To his toes was bound

It gets worse

In amongst the clutter
Were brightly colored balls
When Turnup sat, imagine that
Got the picture ya’ll

Helllllp !

With a bowlegg’d, straddle, waddle
The poor cat tried to run
With hiss an’ spit an’ tizzy fit
An’ decorated buns

Stop, drop an’ roll Turnup !

The room was gettin’ smaller
As Turnup’s tensions grew
As super glued an’ paper shoed
Up the drapes he flew

Help’s on the way

That’s where the missus found him
Atop the curtain rod
She left the room to fetch the broom
"I’ll get you down, by God!"

Epilogue

To clean a cat by shaving
Might seem akin to sin
But scissors cuts around his nuts
Took me an’ two good men

Hey peg... I'm going to be late for work, but this reply simply can't wait. Christmas Cats is fantastic. The humor, imagination, rhyme and flow are perfect. I loved the way you told the story of kitty persoalities. This is on of those poems that I am so envious of... wish I had written this one for sure. Totally enjoyed it, thanks.

4rum - all I can say is :roll:

I've been writing poems for our Christmas cards over the years, so I have a store of them. Here's one about cats:
http://www.shadowpoetry.com/contests/winners/christmascats.html

Here's last years they published in the Christian Science Monitor: http://www.csmonitor.com/2006/1221/p18s02-hfpo.html

This forum's so huge, I just now discovered this thread. Sorry to be so late, but here is one I really like from T.S.Eliot:

T. S. Eliot' s

Journey of the Magi

(1927)

goldrod.gif

"A cold coming we had of it,

Just the worst time of the year

For a journey, and such a long journey:

The ways deep and the weather sharp,

The very dead of winter."

And the camels galled, sore-footed, refractory,

Lying down in the melting snow.

There were times we regretted

The summer palaces on slopes, the terraces,

And the silken girls bringing sherbet.

Then the camel men cursing and grumbling

And running away, and wanting their liquor and women,

And the night-fires going out, and the lack of shelters,

And the cities hostile and the towns unfriendly

And the villages dirty and charging high prices:

A hard time we had of it.

At the end we preferred to travel all night,

Sleeping in snatches,

With the voices singing in our ears, saying

that this was folly.

Then at dawn we came down to a temperate valley,

Wet, below the snow line, smelling of vegetation,

With a running stream and a water-mill beating the darkness,

And three trees on the low sky.

And an old white horse galloped away in the meadow.

Then we came to a tavern with vine-leaves over the lintel,

Six hands at an open door dicing for pieces of silver,

And feet kicking the empty wine-skins.

But there was no information, so we continued

And arrived at evening, not a moment too soon

Finding the place; it was (you may say) satisfactory.

All this was a long time ago, I remember,

And I would do it again, but set down

This set down

This: were we led all the way for

Birth or Death ? There was a Birth, certainly,

We had evidence and no doubt. I had seen birth and death,

But had thought they were different; this Birth was

Hard and bitter agony for us, like Death, our death.

We returned to our places, these Kingdoms,

But no longer at ease here, in the old dispensation,

With an alien people clutching their gods.

I should be glad of another death.

Ex-mas

I'm brand new here so please forgive if I step on any toes or anything.

Ex-Mas

T'was the night before Christmas, and God such a pity.
Broken families were scattered all over the city.
My Ex was snuggled with her new found friend,
And my kids were playing in another man's den.

They soon would be nestled in another man's bed
While memories of Christmas past, danced in my head.

Me in my loneliness, with my dog in my lap,
Drank too much wine and decided to nap
When up on the roof, I heard such a clatter.
I staggered to my window, to see what was the matter.

Once at the window, what a surprise I did get
There was my wife and kids in his shiny Corvette.
She looked at me, with love in her eye, and said,
"Honey, I'm home, for one more try."

My joy soon ended, as my head began to clear
The Corvette was being towed by eight tiny reindeer.
My stupor was followed by a sickening pause,
And a little voice said,
"Fool!
Don't you know there ain't no Santa Clause?"

Good Thread

Yes Miss Candy Dandy:
I've written many. Some from the tears and always from my heart.
Just let me know.
