Well, the CLMP guide is apparently focussed on literary publications. The other you cite is primarily for commercial markets but also with a good range of literary pubs.

If you're going after the lit-journal end of things, you'd do better to subscribe to a magazine such as Poets & Writers. These markets can shift very quickly. For instance, many of them publish only once or twice a year, so by the time their address appears in an annual guide, they're swamped. And it's always nice to find out that a journal's about to close its doors, rather than waiting a year or two to get the SASE.

I have the International Directory of Little Magazines & Small Presses from a few years ago. That's a mammoth thing with small print... just one long paragraph for each publisher that gives the basic info about what they publish, response time, payment, etc. Many markets in here are non-paying, and the book publishers are lumped together with the literary magazines. The 2002-2003 version had few website addresses and e-mail addresses; I hope they've improved that since then, because most publishers do have readily available urls by now. I did find a number of literary magazines in this directory that I'd never heard of before.

The 2006-7 edition is coming out this month (see ).
