Hello!
I've finally decided to make an account after lingering in the forums for so long! I've always been interested in writing fiction but have only now decided to take it seriously and buckle down to get stuff written rather than just talking about it. I have no formal training in creative writing so I thought the forum would be a great resource for learning basic skills and getting feedback for my work! I'll have finished my degree by July and was wondering if it would be worth enrolling myself in a creative writing course? Any thoughts on whether formal training is worth it would be great!

Welcome! In response to your questions, trust your own instincts in regards to enhancing your writing experience with a creative writing course (you know how much time you have on your hands, and what you may or may not be able to sacrifice in terms of other commitments). Congratulations on your graduation in July/Best Wishes with your writing goals.

Take some time and read the Newbie Guide and the Stickies found
at the top of Forum pages. They are your best guide to learning about
Absolute Write.

Don’t forget to read the FAQ regarding posting pictures at AW.

Members who want to start a thread in Share Your Work to have work critiqued need
50 posts. Don’t make a mad dash to reach your 50 posts. Take some time to greet fellow newbies,
critique other members’ works, or join a discussion.

Welcome to AW. Hope you enjoy your stay with us.
How do you like your popcorn?

If you go to the bottom of the page to the 'forum jump' you can scroll down and find all the areas of this place. After you post 50 posts you can use the SYW areas to get help there. The password for some of the areas is…..vista. A word to the wise, it would be a good idea to participate first in helping others before you think about posting your own work. After you have been around here for awhile, then post something of your own for help. Good luck.

:welcome: Welcome to Absolute Write!

The best thing you can do is read a LOT of books in the genre in which you'd like to write. Pick top-sellers, if you're interested in selling what you write. That will give you a feel for the type of styles that appeal to more readers.

  • Join a local writers' group (search http://www.meetup.com/ for groups in your area) and/or share your opening pages on AW's "Share Your Work" section (requires that you have 50 posts, so feel free to go read submissions there and become a "critter")
...and most of all, have fun!
