anybody know of any MG or YA books out there that have a unicorn main character? I have a plot idea for one, and haven't been able to find any out there. I was just curious what's come before me in the unicorn arena :)

Also, what's the lingo around here for what I used to call a "chapter book" when I was a kid? These would be post-picture book, pre MG I guess.

Thanks!

They're still called chapter books. ;)

I can't help with the unicorn books, though. Did you do an Amazon search?

I've seen some early readers (shorter than chapter books, more like easy-to-read PBs) about unicorns, but I can't think of any novels.

ETA: Yipes! Shows how much I know!

Go to RenLearn advanced search http://www.renlearn.com/store/quiz_advanced.asp
and search for "unicorn." About 100 titles pop up!

The only one I can think of is not at all new. It's called Birth of the Firebringer.

I thought they were called chapter books too.

Someone on Amazon already took the time to list a bunch of unicorn books.

You could also just google "books about unicorns." That's where I found this link.

Last summer my little one really enjoyed some of the My Secret Unicorn books by Linda Chapman. Yes, the earlier ones are in with the chapter books, but some of the later ones were in a section for slightly older kids, due to content (still short books, but a bit more scary?) Were bummed that they didn't have the whole series!

There's also mention of unicorns in the Dog Magic, Cat Magic, Hamster Magic... series by Holly Webb. Those are sort of chapter books too I guess. But they're definitely darker material; not exactly for first graders like some other chapter books. (Amazon says Dog Magic is for ages 9-12; 144 pgs.)

Maybe you could break your story up into a series like those above?? Good luck w/it!

There's a series of books called the Unicorn Chronicles. They're MG I believe. I read the first 3 or maybe 4, but the last one kind of turned me off. The main character isn't a unicorn but naturally given the title they're a main part of the story.

The main character in "The Last Battle" by C. S. Lewis (King Tirian) is a human, but his closest friend (and therefore, a secondary lead) is a unicorn.

A classic with unicorn connections is Elidor by Alan Garner. The unicorn isn't a main character, but is important to the plot. Originally, the unicorn was considered to be a unique twist, so the blurb didn't have any mention of it. Modern versions of the book are more likely to mention the unicorn and put it on the front cover. Handy to know if you find an older copy, as you might wonder if you've got the right book.

There's a series about evil bloodthirsty unicorns and their unicorn tamers (or something) and I think the first book is Rampant. It's sort of "Aww, look at the cute widdle unicorn OH GOD GET IT OFF ME THE HORRIBLE STABBING AND CHOMPING!!!" type of thing.
Also check out Zombies Vs. Unicorns--half the stories are about unicorns, and the anthology has jokey story introductions in which the editors argue about whether zombies or unicorns are more awesome.

And one I just read, Into The Wildewood, had a pretty good unicorn in it.
