What about looking at story collections instead of novels? I think that often the short story is overlooked because they're not as "important" as are novels. I disagree. And most likely, those of us here will get (or have already got) their first publishing credits by selling short stories.

I recommend Pump Six by Paolo Bacigalupi. I checked it out from the library, thoroughly enjoyed it. So much so, that I went out and bought my own copy. Yes, I think this writer is that important.

I'd love to read Pump Six (the collection - I've read the excellent title story) but it's an expensive hardcover not published in the UK (so I can't get it out of the library), and I'm on book-buying budget this year. If people want to go ahead with this, just ignore me - I won't be able to take part, that's all.

As it's just come up in the cantina, though I know it's been a possible before - how about Stanislaw Lem's Solaris? ETA: Just seen that Fenika's already nominated it!

That's a bummer about Pump Six. Are there any similar collections that are more universally available?

We could read What If?

:D (And the suggestion has NOTHING to do with the fact I wrote one of the stories.)

I've got a copy of Cyberabad Days sitting not far away from me, so that would certainly suit me fine!
