In a rare moment of naivete, I signed a contract with Publish America without “Googling” the company. It wasn’t until after I signed it, that I did an internet search on their reputation and discovered the many, many complaints about their integrity in publishing. I originally went with them because were adamant about not requiring me to pay to publish, which I refuse to do.
After dealing with them for a while, I began to see what some of the complaints were about but I felt that I could live with them as long as I didn’t bite on their countless offers to buy my own books. Actually I did make a small order in order to get my book on Amazon.dot. com Direct. I even overlooked a sneaky one day $5.95 deal on the books and notified my friends but had to re-notify my rather large contact list not to buy the book at $24.95.
Then, I got an email that offered to sell paperback copies of my book for $8.95, which is what they are worth BUT then I see that I had to buy 9 books before they would make it available in paperback for a lower price. I called “author support” and complained and got a cold, nasty reception that simply ignored my complaint. Good PR.
Now I will notify my friends not to purchase my books at the outrageous cost of 24.95. The book is not that good. They could have had about 100 purchases of the book at the lower price.
The complaints on the net are completely justified. I’m embarrassed even to be associated with them. They are no more than slick operators and will and should not be considered a legitimate publisher.
I will now join the voices of those who have warned others about the publisher. Of course I will notify the Maryland Better Business Bureau about their practices. I know they could care less about this because there are also other ego absorbed, frustrated authors that will be prime targets for their scam. I’ll just warn as many people as I can.
