I decided to try and get published outside of magazines and submit to a publisher. My mistake was submitting to PA. I did not understand how the publishing world worked or that such companies, frauds, like PA were out there.

I should have known that something was up with them when two days after I sent in my manuscript it was accepted. But since I thought it was an exciting moment I did not think of it until a after I read their sample contract.

They stated to me the sample contract was just that, a sample and did not reflect anything similiar to the one I would get. Well the only thing that was different was my title of the book, which I did not want to be the title, appeared in the contract. Dumb me, who was busy with term papers, work, children, and marriage, signed it mailed it in.

The title, Love and Other Disasters, was not even my first choice of a title. I sent in a varied form of the title and they changed it without my permission.

Upon hearing that I figured on maybe they are an okay company, maybe they have many readers, editors...whatever...and wanted to publish me.

Then they wanted me to tell them what kind of cover I wanted. I told them and then they came back with a cover that was not even close to what I wanted. I said make a black and white cover a broken vase and dead flowers (I don't remember exactlly what it was but close to that).

They sent back, as posted in another thread on this forum, my book cover with a rose whose petals are falling off. I said no to it and got an email to days later asking me to send in my edited manuscript. I did. And got an emailing saying their editors were editing it too.

Okay great I thought.

Back to the cover...

Then after they said they edited the book they said it went to print. Best part about going to print was the actual release date. Feburary 23. I sent in my final edit, after the release date. Then a few weeks later, I foudn out my book was released. They never told me it was.

Then I find out from a person on this forum my cover was ripped from Juipter Images. That was the final straw. I mentioned this on their forums and an hour later was banned from posting. I then have written many emails to them telling them they are frauds and violated my contract in various ways. They have not emailed me back yet.

It it was not for the various magazines that have published my work, I would think I was a joke of a writer. Thankfully I have accomplished more than having PA scam me. Now I have to rebuild what little rep I had and make a new name for myself. Live and learn.

Now I keep getting emails wanting me to buy bulk copies of my book, 18 or 38 at a time at various discounts. I never have. I never will.

After I got it off my chest and I see I am not the only one who dealt with their practices and I feel better. Those 15 stories in that book can rest in their hands until the contract expires for all I care. I have moved on to better stories and better opportunities. I would like my rights back, but I can deal if they are not.

Welcome ghosted. I'm sorry to hear you had such a horrible experience; there are a lot of people on this forum that have similar stories with PA. Everything you have described is their usual unprofessional practices.

Don't judge your writing by PA's reputation. Their acceptance means nothing as far as the quality of your work - they just work faster than the rest.

What Cyia said and welcome to AW! :welcome:

I, too, signed with PA and am not one of the 35,000 (happy, dammit!) authors. I'm glad you are continuing to write and aren't letting this one misstep derail plans for your next book. There is life after PA!!!

Hi ghosted,

I'm Marian. I sent you a message via your website comment form with both a link to the stock images thread and a heads-up that your threads would soon vanish from the PAMB.

You'll find this place somewhat different. :) I hope you enjoy your experience here and keep writing!

ghosted, it's good you found out now before you bought copies of your own book to sell. You're not out any money, and you're chalking up that book as a hard lesson learned and moving on. Good!

Welcome to AW :)

I got three for myself... only after they discontinued given out author copies to their writers. Funny thing is, people who signed up after I did were given author copies. I don't understand that one.

You're not alone, sir.

If I may ask, what was the real title of the book supposed to be?

Monster, Mayhem, and Madness

which was ignored and was asked for title which i sent in:

Palsms for the Mentally Ill

which was again ignored so I sent in:

Love and other Diasters: 15 Grim Tales

which was converted to

Love and Other Disasters

which I hated. I never argued so I'll take blame for the title.

Knowing PA, they may well have accidentally signed up these people under the old contract instead of the new one. No incompetence seems beyond them.

Far far away
They must have a habit of turning down titles as they turned down 3 of mine - citing other books were being published through them at the same time with the same titles as I picked  and after I was completely frustrated I just went with something I hated and they picked it.
