There's a bit more to the story. Before he started PublishAmerica with Larry Clopper, Willem Meiners ran a vanity publisher called Erica House, which charged several thousand dollars to publish. The fees were not disclosed on Erica House's website. Writers also had to buy two Erica House books as a condition of submitting, so they could see what the company was all about.
There was also a literary agency, Erica Books, which (according to advisories I received) referred writers to Erica House.
