Yes, I'm sure my math is off and someone will take much joy in correcting me, but it's all in fun, and anyway, I'm much better at juggling words.

Imagine if you will,
a large stadium near Fredrick, MD....

Announcer's voice:

Greetings to all you lurking PA writers!

Got your Kool-Ade? Great!

Drink deep because we're about to play Crunch the Numbers!

That's right, it's the hottest game in Fredrick, Maryland, slower than the lottery, but more of a sure thing.

On this side we have 20,000 erstwhile writers!

And on this side--the Stooges and their POD machine!

Writers--submit your manuscripts!

What an amazing thing--ALL 20,000 manuscripts are going to get the chance they deserve. I've never seen anything like it in the history of publishing. Apparently every single one of those books is ready to sell, as is, because I don't see any editing going on...

Here we go, contract time. The writers' books are tied up for seven years, BUT all the writers get a ONE DOLLAR advance. Looks like trouble for the PA team--they're down 20-thousand dollars in the first round!

And now the writers are all getting their free copies of their own books. At a base cost for paper, ink, and power to run the machine that's costing the PA team another maybe 5 bucks each plus the time to print and mail them. They're DOWN by at least 200,000 dollars. Oh, my gosh, HOW can they STAY in business doing that?

Hang on--something is happening in the writer camp--they want to buy copies of their own books--at a small percentage below the cover price. A very small percentage, and look how much those books cost: even the thin ones of 100 pages or so are retailing for 18-24 dollars EACH! Similar size books are selling elsewhere for half that--but the Stooges are getting away with it!

So we have 20K writers spending an average of 20.00 to buy at least one more copy of their own book.

Holy cow! What a rebound! PA has just scored 400,000.00 dollars in a single play!!!

They've gotten back their outlay and grossed a huge profit! God bless the American Way! Look at the Stooges wave that flag while they're praising Jesus, it just warms your heart!

Whoa--something is happening again in the writer camp...

Look at that, LOOK at THAT--there are more writers lining up to order MORE copies of their books. There's another 400,000.00 grossed for the Stooges!! They'll be able to keep most of that, too. What a grrrreat day for the Stooges!

No action from the bookstores as yet--nope, they're leaving the stadium. Looks like they got a look at the Stooge discount for bookstore orders. Yup, they make more money from the change dropped at the stores' Starbucks franchises.

Look over there, some of the writers have their books and are begging individual store managers to stock them. Not the way to get on the bestseller list, I mean, Stephen King didn't do that before he got famous, did he? Can you imagine Truman Capote printing out bumper stickers and fridge magnets for Breakfast at Tiffany's or In Cold Blood? Bookmarks, maybe, but he'd never stuff them under windshield wipers.

Hey--we've got some action! A phalanx of five B&N managers has broken through the writer lines, they're making a bid for freedom, and bolting for the stadium exits. Look at them go--but the writers are right behind them in hot pursuit, waving their books.

Something interesting on the other end of the field...it looks like a hard core of writers are coming back to give more of their money to the Stooges AND they're bringing in their friends.

What's this--? SOME of the writers are totaling their outlay for buying their books, checking their royalty statements, and they don't look happy. They're asking Miranda some awkward questions. Yikes--cover your ears if you don't like rough language! She's dressing them down like a drill sergeant, telling them how GRATEFUL they should be--my goodness, that woman has big brass ones--she is actually demanding they apologize!

It's amazing--some of them are ordering more books!

But the others...they're looking this way where the Absolute Write crowd is hanging out. There's been yelling and catcalls from that part of the stadium, but the Stooges have a marching band playing over there to drown out the noise. Lots of flag waving and Jesus praising going on, but some of the AWs are waving to the PA writers, inviting them over. They have free popcorn and coffee and yes, they are listening to the writers' complaints about how the Stooges are treating them. I see hand-shaking! What a day!

Uh-oh--the Stooges aren't giving up, they've got a flag-waving, Jesus-praising website up. Oh, my goodness, look at all those patriotic church-goers filing in to refresh the writer team. The new kids are holding up their manuscripts for submission in one hand and their checkbooks in another. The Stooges are accepting ALL of THEM! Looks like another 400,000-dollar gross for their team.

It just breaks your heart, but there's hope yet--seems the AW side of the stadium is growing as more and more of the PA writers are waking up to the fact that when you play Crunch the Numbers with the Stooges, you LOSE!!

This is your announcer Thomas Aloysius "Boats" Gillhoughly, signing off for the Absolute Write Forums. Have a great day!

The Star-Spangled Banner?

Nope, they're singing America:

All beautiful, unedited, our works of perfect prose
Rejected by the "Big Boys" who are looking down their nose,
Publishing! America! And published there for free!
"Available" through bookstores, too, from sea to shining sea!

And I bet it's being sung all screechy and off-key, with a few faithfuls hoisting their Bics high overhead as they sway back and forth...

Blue Angels? Oh HELL No!

Why have jets when you can have the marvelous, wonderous, splendiforous

HELLOCOPTER!

Making a surprise appearance is the Hellocopter, bringing its joyous message or peace, love and tax shelters to the fruited plains.

I noticed that on PA's main page, they state almost 30,000 books are available from PA. On a recent letter they sent to a writer, they claimed to have sold two million books. So, let's do the math!

2,000,000/30,000=66.66666

Gee, that's not even reaching the average of 75 sales that can ordinarily be expected. I guess they'll have to jettison the Hello card to get that Hellocopter off the ground now or they'll run out of fuel before reaching their next destination since they probably can't afford to fill up the tank completely. Poor Willem... ;)

Perseverance and Angels were on her side

I've given up trying to find the exactly right thread to post this, and dare not start a new one when the forum is littered with PA threads, so this seemed as good a place as any. I opened up my local paper on Sunday and there in the Local Living section was this huge colour article on this woman's 20 year quest to be published titled Perseverance and Angels were on her side. The genre sounded a little strange to me: Christian spiritual romantic mystery and the cover of the book was awful, but then, what do I know? I was so glad to see all her perseverance paying off.

It chronicled her many revisions, her 2" thick file of rejections and how finally the day dawned when her book was published...by Publish America.

I'm hoping this woman's journey will be happier than the many others who have been duped by PA, but does seem doubtful. I wish there was a way to telepathically alert writers to steer clear.

FYI, I just browsed their site and I see they are promoting one of their thousands of books, this one titled Murder at the Statue of Lierty. I'm sure the author is thrilled with the spelling.

Kansas! Again.
I know that PA is markedly unpopular, but this just seems crass. You're slamming the writers pretty hard too, depicting them in this manner, and they're already getting screwed.

My slam was aimed at the hardcore Kool Aid swillers who put fingers in their ears and go la-la-la and all too eagerly bring in others to the Fredrick, MD version of the La Brea tar pits.

They're welcome to wake up and check out AW.

I've talked to many bookstore managers who find it hard to nod and be polite to the PAs who come in every week fully expecting to be treated like a celebrity fresh from an Oprah interview since they've been told they're now a "published author!" Managers know they have to turn them down, and the PAs don't understand why.

That's often their first hint that there's a skunk in the woodshed.

The managers don't want to offend PA customers or deliver the bad news; most really would rather bolt for the exit than deal with them.

When I go in to set up a signing the first thing I have to say to their community relations person is "My book is with St. Martins/Baen/Random House, NOT with PubliSHAMerica!"

The look of relief they get would be funny if the situation of all those ripped off writers wasn't so sad.

Crass works for me. I've always got a ready supply for the Stooges.

Reminds me of the book featured in PA's flier three years ago+, Amoung [sic] the Ravening Sharks. Misspelling in the title and right on the cover. Too bad, as the book sounded as though it had promise (investment industry tell-all). That goof was overlooked by PA -- along with typos and errors in the text of the flier. That error-laden flier was one tipoff to one author, who rejected signing with PA after seeing that flier. Today her book (published by a small press) is a finalist for a major international book award (first prize is more than for a Pulitzer).

Yes, I'm quoting myself, but I thought I should clarify that I intentionally did not identify either the woman or her book in my post. I simply felt sorry for her. I randomly found another title on PA's website (apparently published in 2005) and saw the sad misspelling. It was unrelated to the story published in my local newspaper on Sunday.

I think there is nothing "crass" in warning poor writers who have toiled for years without success about scamming publishers, agents and those who prey on the unsuspecting, the optimistic, the gullible - writers who just want to see their books in print (and don't we all?) and think they've found the answer. I don't want to see their dreams dashed. Aren't they the dreams we all have, and do we want to see any of us in the same position?

Bluestone,

Bartholomew's remarks just happened to be posted below your post, but they were not directed at your comments. They were directed to the OP and this thread in general. (At least that's my take on it. ;))

Perseverance ...

One of the major errors writers make is writing a book then spending twenty years trying to sell it.

That first book is probably unsalable. They should send it out, sure, but they should spend those twenty years writing twenty more books. By the time number four or five is written (provided they've been learning from their mistakes rather than simply repeating them), they might actually have a salable book.
