Time for Writing? Time for social media?

Would you consider paying for someone to manage your social media promotions?

I self-pub. Sometimes I have the time for social media, and sometimes I don't have the time. I would never pay someone else to do it simply because I like being in charge of my own destiny. Hence the reason I self-pub. I also want anything posted out there to be from me to my fans. I'm not sure someone else would be able to get across the feeling I would want to convey. Even if it is just a promotion, I still want it to come from me.

Actually, even if you're lucky enough to get a publicist through a commercial publisher, you'd still be expected to do your fair share of promotion through social media and such. If you didn't, your publisher would stop and reconsider how much you actually care about your book and wonder why they picked you up in the first place.

I self pub and self promote. It does eat up a lot of time...

Are you just promoting one book? I think one person here has not answered the poll!

Anyhow, to the above person about the trad. publisher.

Even if the traditional publisher hires a publicist, or you have to do it yourself, one of you is going to be responsible for social media.
So my question is in that case, who is responsible for it?

I have read that it gets done through their publicist which was given by the traditional publishers. However, I assume that it can vary.

I would love to hear more from people. THANKS!

Right. At some point, hopefully, you are going to be soooo busy, you may not have time to keep up. Maybe it is not until you have a bunch of books out, etc.

This is a common problem with people running their own businesses. So I am trying to see if it is a problem with authors as well.

Writingallthetime, if you want this thread moved just let me know. If it fits better where you want it to go, I'll happily move it.

Oh funny...
Well, I had also started this in the blogging forum, but I do not know if anybody replied there.

Ah, sorry. I didn't see any indication that it was moved already. I guess it's fine here now!

My answer doesn't fit the categories. I self-publish and don't have a lot of time for social media, but make the time to do what I consider to be most beneficial.

To Diana and the last poster,

Yes, it seems that I missed the option for those who have a publisher but are still required to do their social media.

Who was it that selected that they would pay someone?
From what I understand, this can get burdensome.

I am doing some research as to whether or not there is a need for managing social media.

Not even necessarily the actual contact with the public, just managing it. Campaigns, deleting spam, posting trailers, press releases, all the stuff which eats up writing time.

Maybe I should start a different poll asking which services people are likely to pay for.

I am a writer, but I am self-publishing. I am opening a web-site for self-publishers very soon, and I am trying to see what exactly writers need help with in their process. It could even be those who are traditionally published. Just looking at ideas.

I'm going to self-pub. I have been making time for Twitter, but not a tremendous amount of time. The goal is to spend it writing, not spend it doing promotion. A lot of writers fall into the trap of putting too much effort into promoting their book and not enough on writing the next one. It's not helped by social media experts who say to get on everything. I'm just on Twitter and have a blog. That's it. I set up nine timed tweets in the morning (mostly non-writing topics) and do replies after work. I probably spend half an hour total, and the time is when I wouldn't be writing anyway.

Once I have the book out, I also plan to volunteer for panels at science fiction conventions. I'll probably bring something like a booklet of the first couple of chapters of the book to give out.
