He glides his fingers over the open flame
Of a candle,
Relishing the quick burst
Of fleeting pain.
The minuscule fire dances and flickers in protest
Creating a strobe effect
In his darkened room.

Mesmerized by its pulsing beauty
He hopes
For the heat to warm him.
He prays
For the smoke to intoxicate him.
He begs
For its light to free him.

I loved this poem. I'd personally change the last line to 'for its light to set him free', but that's just personal preference in how things should flow. Anyway, loved the imagery -it's nothing new, but that's sort of the beauty of it -I see it clearly. Great job.
