Okay, so, a dead body found in a standard suburban house. Home owner is a cop, if that makes any difference. Body is downstairs and crime scene is firmly contained to one room, but the death is obviously violent and suspicious.

What's the protocol? Where would the police question the people who lived there (and found the body)? If they just found the body, would they need to go to the hospital, the morgue, anything? They're not related to the victim but they know who she is straightaway. Is there any way they'd be allowed to stay in the house, or would they need to find somewhere else to go? (Also, the home owner is a cop, does this make any difference?)

Bodies go to the morgue, not the hospital, unless the morgue is also in the hospital, in which case another entrance other then the ambulance entrance is used. Unless a visual identification is needed, they house's residentes not going to the morgue. And even then, unless they're the only people who can identify the person, it's not likely.

Police officer home owner is probably going to be suspended with pay pending closure of the investigation against him. His department will not be doing anything with the investigation. Everybody in the house would be considered to be either a person of interest or a suspect.

Entire house and grounds will be viewed as a possible part of the crime scene until proven to the contrary. Residents would be questioned at the police station probably. They would probably be escorted to grab some necessities. Probably not going to be allowed in for a few days. And add in a day for cleaning and airing if the body bled a lot.

Best of luck,

Jim has it right, with the possible exception of being suspended. Sometimes they might just get desk duty. Others they may have no change of work status. That all depends on circumstances and what the direction of the investigation is. The beauty of that is you can write it the way you need to fit your story and it could be believable.
