Like many of y'all, I'm considering entering the Backspace Query Contest but I'm sort of confused on the correct way to address the letter.

It's a query, so normally it would be addressed to a specific agent, but this one is going to "Sara Kendall's Holding Pen, Nancy Coffey Literary & Media Representation." It will be read by one of four well-known agents.

So how do I address it correctly?

Thanks,

Lucie

How about "Dear agent"?

I doubt they are worried about the way you address it if it is being sent to a "holding pen." I would assume they are interested in what follows the "Dear whoever."

Thanks y'all. I went with "Dear Backspace Judges:" I know it's not terribly flashy, but I didn't want to say Dear Agent and didn't want to attract too much attention to the opening.

Thanks anyway,

Lucie

I read agents HATE this, because it sounds like you're sending them a form letter. I would send the query Dear Ms. Kendall since she is the owner of the holding pen at the address of Nancy Coffrey Literary Agency.
