I just joined today, but I've been reading and learning from these posts for a year. I've got two books under my belt and just want to say this forum is great! I've been feeling like a pariah and that it's a bad thing to be a new writer, but now I don't feel so alone out here in no man's land - the land of the unpublished!

I do have some questions: First, e-publishing - is this a viable alternative for new writers like myself in terms of getting exposure and hopefully catching the interest of serious agents and publishers for future work? Also, does anyone know anything about Club Lighthouse Publishing - good or bad? They want to take a look at my romance novel.

Hop into the forums and post some questions where they'll do the most good. :)

From what I've read, e-publishing is catching on enough to be a good springboard.

Hmm...Club Lighthouse hasn't got high standards for what they publish, judging by an excerpt I just read (purple crud with dangling modifiers, and tangled verbosity galore). Not company I would want to keep.

HI there! And :welcome:

Epublishing is growing like mad, but you need to be careful and do your research because not all are worth your time.

Don't worry - hang out and poke around. Ask questions. There's always someone who can and will answer!

Hi there, Ms. Jem! First of all welcome to AW! There are some very good e-publishers around, that I know. I have a friend who's published with Loose-id and she is very happy with it. You can always check them out.

Welcome to AW, Jim. I've tried e-pubs twice, and they both turned out to be bummers. But don't take my track record for the Gospel, I'm sure there are some really good e-publishers out there. (I just won't go that route again!)

Sorry about that, I typed Jim instead of Ms Jem. Forgive me, please. Just wasn't watching what I was doing :) Where's my cup of coffee?!?

Oh, I also wanted to add that you shouldn't expect epublishing to necessarily be an easier way in - some of the best epubs are as difficult to break into as the print houses in NY.

Not that you shouldn't try - just don't take it as an "easier" route to agents, etc. :)

Thanks for the welcome everyone! I will get on the forums and see what I can find out. I'm getting the idea that Club Lighthouse is involved with a different type of romance than the kind I have in mind!

In my experience epublishing can be a good approach on its own right if you are *highly* selective where you submit. But if your manuscript is publishable by a large press, why not try there first?

I read a good book by Stephen King 'On Writing.' I believe he mentioned receiving 87 rejections over several years. I've received a couple hundred rejections so far in the one year I've been submitting mostly to editors and a few (I can count on one hand) publishers. The generic response is the editor's workload or the material is 'not right for me.' Truthfully, both of my books barely resemble the earlier submissions due to revision upon revision and they are better for it, but I am getting the feeling that the industry is shying away from new authors. The economy probably has something to do with it, they are sticking with their tried and true authors. I just wonder if those authors are generating any sales right now. So, I thought to broaden my horizons a bit with e-publishing. I am attempting to post a chapter of my latest in the romance forum now.
