OK, I better 'fess up before I embarrass myself!
That is not really an election poster. He donated a bit of money to a friend's wedding and this poster seems to be the custom over there... I just thought it was hilarious!

I don't follow the local election news when I am there, and anyway it is usually all in Tamil. But I am always aware of huge rallies and demos, heated tempers, loudspeakers blaring, and sometimes rioting. So I know it is quite a violent affair.

You mean the Tamil Tigers? No, that's Sri Lanka, mainly the north and east of the country.

Tamil is a language/ethnicity. The Tamils in Sri Lanka, before they came to Sri Lanka, were from Tamil Nadu, a state in India. The Tamils in this country came over in two waves, the last one a hundred or two years ago (my Sri Lankan history sucks), although there are of course trickles constantly happening. Mainly in the direction of Tamils leaving for India and refugee camps there these days, though. And, to state what I hope is obvious, not all Tamils are Tamil Tigers or sympathize with the Tamil Tigers.

And that picture was taken in Tamil Nadu. Tamil BTW is the oldest living language of India and the world. It has a literary tradition of over two thousand years. The oldest known literary work in Tamil, has been dated variously between second century BC and fifth century AD. Tamil was declared a classical language of India by the Government of India in 2004 and was the first Indian language to have been accorded the status.

I've been told it's avery complex langage, difficult to learn. I never learned more than a few words, regrettably. My son has alwyas engaged with the people and has learned a bit more.
