Falling Into Your Own Pet Peeve Trap

Don't you just hate it when you fall into your own pet peeve trap? Mine is people who misuse it's vs. its, and I am unmerciful when I see it. But every now and then, if I am typing something quickly like an email or forum post, I will use them incorrectly myself. Grrrrrrrrrrr! The only good thing about being over 40 is that I can blame it on a senior moment, but that doesn't salve the wound to my ego because I know that I should know better.

I've never written this, but one person in particular used to hate it when I said, "these ones."

Like the answer to the question, "Which ones?"

"These ones," I would say.

The person said I should simply say, "These."

My mother tells me the person was right.....

I have it when TV anouncers say, 'and there's a large amount of people here at the match ...'. Are they measuring the people on weight or volume? I'd rather be counted as one of a number of people.

In recent years, I find myself typing words that sound something like the word I mean to type ("Don't worry, you'll be find"), or words that start with the same string of characters ("Don't worry, you'll be final"). Spell check doesn't catch either error. And if I don't proofread carefully, I feel like a complete and total doofus when someone spots it.

Using and and but to start sentences...grrrr
I'll be lazy and do them in emails to friends but I'm merciless in editing the buggers out.

In real life people use conjunctions to start sentences and paragraphs. In a lot of places it works so I use it. But I don't do it a lot.

I'm generally good with subject/verb agreement when I'm writing a draft, but all too often I'll revise the subject then neglect updating the verb. I leave MS Word's flaky grammar checker turned on just to help me catch these issues.

I actually do this on purpose just to be difficult. I know it's not altogether proper. But sometimes I like the way it sounds.

LOL. Ask them politely if they'd like it if you axed their mother.

Sorry, I thought it was funny at the time. The colloquialism or Ebonics or whatever they'd like to call it to justify it bugs me too.
