As some of you know, I'm new to Orson Scott Card's writing. I'm still not a sci-fi fan but there's no denying the amazing talent this man has to captivate readers with his characters and the worlds he creates.

OSC's website is an amazing resource. I would love to attend one of his workshops. The Q&A section alone would be worth having to pay a subscription to. Thankfully, he doesn't charge.

I'm developing an inordinate amount of respect for this man.

You might like to get hold of his books on writing in that case. Characters & Viewpoint and How to Write Science Fiction and Fantasy that's if you haven't already.

I have the former, but not the latter. C&V is on my list to read this weekend, actually. I'm not a sci-fi fan but I do enjoy fantasy books, but I'm very picky about them. Not sure if I'd venture to write one at this point.

HtoWSF&F is an amazing resource, for both genre and non-genre writers. It's a slim book and worth the price for the sections on "Writing Well" and "The Life and Business of Writing."

C&V is dense-packed with insights; you'll need to give it several months, not a couple days, to get the most out of it.

Thanks. It'll get read several times. The first time through, I read it cover to cover. After that, I end up breaking it down. Becoming more familiar with OSC's work, I'm pretty excited about reading this.

I'm sure I'll end up with this book, too.

I need to start writing best sellers just to keep up with all the books I want to buy...

"J M McDermott's School of Writing" in two easy lessons:

1) Make sure that whatever you are writing is more interesting than all the other crap you could be doing with your time, otherwise stop and do all that other crap.

2) Edit all the suck out of whatever you're writing. Bribe people to help you find the suck and edit it out.

Hm. I guess Orson Scott Card has a few good ideas, too. Like, how to turn something very simple into a length I can sell as a writer guide...
