she went into acute respiratory distress last night. Our wonderful vet came to our house (in the snow), checked her over carefully, and gently guided us to the realization that it was time to let go.

She went very peacefully, her breathing became easier, softer, slower and then she was gone.

Oh, Judy, I'm so sorry! Hugs to you today. What a caring vet you have. It sounds like your beloved 'baby' went to her rest surrounded by the people that cared most. How good that you enjoyed her for so many years; cherish those memories.

Aging. Writing. Aging. Writing...
Mammoth, my cat, is 16.
We've grown old together, our joints stiff, we both tread up the stairs much slower than once upon a time.

It will be like losing a child and a best friend, for he's beside me no matter where I plop down to write/read/sip tea.

I've even caught him a time or two in my chair, front paws up on the desk, staring at the monitor--I SWEAR attempting to be an editor...

I feel your loss more than you can know; more than words can convey.

I'm so sorry for that clenching pain ripping through your chest; the hollowness.

I'm so sorry for your loss - it sucks, doesn't it? Here are some :Hug2: for you.

At least she went peacefully, with the people she loved with her, warm and safe. You can't ask for more than that, can you? A good life, people to love, and a peaceful end.

I lost my beloved shepherd/collie mix five years ago - Bear was only 11 and not only my guardian, but my daughter's as well. My feet still feel the absence (he used to lay on them while I worked) - but now it makes me smile. Hopefully, Wisdom will do the same as the wound heals.

More :Hug2:

Sorry to hear about Wisdom.
I still miss the cat who died more than a year ago.

I'm so very sorry.
You were very fortunate to be her family for so long, as was she.

I'm sorry it was Wisdom's time. Standing beside you for what it's worth. They never stay with us long enough.
That great big empty feeling that seems larger than you will slowly fill. Happy memories help.

Hugs,
Christina

My hubby, wrote a lovely story about what he experienced when she escaped her body. Very amazing, beautiful and uplifting, too.

If you would like to read it, it's on my blog.

My experience was different. I felt her relief as she was freed from her ancient body, I felt her energy rising but because I was almost hysterical with grief, I didn't see what he and the vet saw.

I'm so sorry about Wisdom. It doesn't matter how long they're with us, it is never long enough. Letting my Shadow go was the hardest thing I ever did.

Judy -
I am so sorry. My baby girl is now (wait for the math) 13/14 years old. I dread the loss.
My heart goes out to you. Hug Wisdom in your heart. She is still there.

:Hug2:Judy, I just found this thread. I'm so awful sorry to hear about Wisdom. What your husband wrote was beautiful! It always gives me comfort to know that when I die my long lost and loved pets will be the first ones to greet me. I know this sounds crazy, but I hope it works out that way because they will be the first ones I want to see. I hope the hole in your heart is filled soon. It sounds like Wisdom had the best mommy and daddy she could have. Hugs go out to your family, including her two pals.

Thank you

for your words of comfort. They have warmed my heart, comforted my soul, been shared with my hubby and made us both cry. Every word is and will always be treasured.

We left for vacation this morning, I'm writing from Bellingham, WA. We brought Wisdom's ashes with us and will be returning her to the earth, a little bit at each of the places we visit on this trip that we know she loved. If we can work up the nerve to open the little jar they gave us.

What is amazing to me is how much room and energy such a small beastie added to our household and lives.
My husband remarked that the other noisy life in our house was gone - that he was the only one left. Mercy, Joy and I are more quiet and still than he or Wisdom; if there was a noisy ruckus at our house Mark or Wisdom would be causing it.

The other two still miss her, of course, but have both started comfort-giving and comfort-seeking. I was worried about Mercy, she and Wisdom were (adopted) sisters for 12 years and Mercy stayed in her bed for two full days. I think it was more confusing for her because she wasn't awake that night. BUT, all is better.

Judy
