It's been suggested I add a map to my WIP (ancient Palestine) to help the reader track the movements of my story. I want to create my own map, or tailor an existing map with just the features and placenames relevant to my story. Can anyone suggest a good cartography program, or source, that won't break the bank, but that would ouput a decent product?

Many thanks in advance.

Well, it's quite expensive but you might find someone you could borrow it from...

Bibleworks7 has the facility to produce excellent quality customised maps of Palestine. Try a pastor or a bible student?

This suggestion requires a little work, but I think is very cost effective.

Hit the history department at the nearest university and scan the map into the computer. Then just use photoshop to eliminate what you don't want to see. It would take some time, but photoshop is easy, relatively cheap (or someone you know has it), and I've had some good quality results with it.
