a thick, glossy, transparent sphere that refracts all the azure light of the sea and produces wavering, distorted images of the sea life that inspects it.

What interests me is the act of passing through the bubble. I would suggest that anyone who does becomes part of the bubble's continuum, maybe the surface of their body alters or there is a curious sensation. This could be given a nautical name/term as if it is a normal phenomenon for such underwater sailors.

Okay, I'll take a shot.

The deck looked like the bottom of a pool, rainbows dancing in ever-changed shapes around MC's feet. She looked up. A glassy spehere encased the deck. The surface spun a kliadascope of opaque colors, sureally silent, like something from a fairy tale. Swarms of fish parted over it, thier little shadows flickering over MC's face.
"Oh," MC breathed. She was inside a bubble.

Okay, it's a bit dramatic, but that's something like what I would do. If you wanted, you could bring it home with childhood wonderment over blowing bubbles. Just a thought.

Hey Mizz Lurkey-the above two are pretty terrific ideas-I also like very much the idea of having whomever passes through the bubble even in a dry suit having small changes happen to their bodies that only become evident after a time-that might be interesting I should think-well to me at least-gives you another opportunity to solve a situation-us readers love situations don't cha know-oh and sounds like you have an interesting idea-not new by any means but your description of the ship-steampunk that is not old but could be eggstremelly inteyeresting. Good luck kiddo just remember that everything has been done before-well just about I think-so writing it in your style and your voice-well that is what maketh the differencio-Dave
