[Community] Writing.com

writingchick

Someone wrote to me about an interview and that they are form authorsite.com When I went to check out this website, it didn't exist. I checked on other search engines and found links to it, but they didn't go anywhere. Does anyone know about them, or if they have a new website address? Thanks

Still no "authorsite.com". Did it ever exist?

Yeah, a couple different search strings dumped me there. Methinks they've got their keywords set to pull folks in.

Though this may be looked down upon (since Writing.com is an advertiser on this site), I was curious if anybody had any experience on the Writing.com website. With the membership size and in some cases clumsy layout I was turned off from checking it out myself. But I've noticed that there are some writers on there with fairly good quality stuff (though I haven't seen any that were actually published I also haven't done much looking), but considering that for the most part it seems like a place to display your work as opposed to discussion (like this forum), it seems more like...shall we say a vanity writing website?

One of my main queries is will I get some good exposure posting a short story on there if I can't get it published in a magazine quickly?

Your thoughts?

I may be way out on this, but I don't believe that anyone who can PAY you is cruising that site for material.

I registered over there thinking that it was a writing board similar to this one but on checking it further I don't think that I'll go much. There's something off about that site, although I can't say what.

I won't post any work there...

I've got an account there (free one), and in my opinion the site is nothing special. I've been a member for over a year and had about one decent critique in that time. If you're just looking for readers, then yeah, it'll put your story out there to be read, ( along with, to be honest, a LOT of crap) but your best best is to post the story in SYW and people will help you improve it, maybe to a publishable standard. You wont get that with writing.com, not in my experience anyway.

I've had a free account over there for a few years, but I don't think I've ever posted anything or even spent much time. And the pieces that I've read were really bad, to be honest.
The message boards are set up really strangely, too - they're hard to manuever and impossible to find anything. I don't like it very much.

I've seen a fair share of crap over here too. But the design of this site is superb. Full marks to the webmaster.

Uh, why would you think that? I was answering the OP's question as to whether the other site was good for advancement and exposure.

Thanks for all the feedback.

What is SYW?

Whoa, down there kitty. :) I think MM was merely making a devil's advocate statement, not trying to say the quality of AW was sub par or anything. It's a valid enough statement to make, but then I think with the number of published authors on here and the cohesive design of the site (thanks to vBulletin I would say mostly, nothing against the webmaster of course though), and of course great user participation it would seem likely that some may do just that. Perhaps someone should do a poll, if one hasn't been done, of users that got exposure from AW that led to something professionally.

So anybody else that had a positive experience on Writing.com? Or is it all sub par and lackluster?

WDC (Writing.com)--I've been a member there since 2001 and it has its good sides and bad sides...but I'm afraid I shan't get into them publicly as people from the site can see these message boards. It's not a bad site for posting writing (and getting feedback IF you're lucky), but if you're really in it for publication, I don't think WDC will do you much good. Since I'm not seeking publication, but rather to just display my work, it serves me more use, obviously. It's not vanity publishing, but it's more a display site than anything. There is an extensive review system based on star ratings, and people (particularly newbies) can ask for reviews, though oftentimes these will be very general or short.

Reviewing on the site used to be a lot more active but not so much anymore, I'm afraid. I think one has to really be friends with a lot of people on the site to obtain the most use from it, and I don't really know anybody there. In order to stand out you have to be really social and aggressive, which I'm not. There's the writing display side of the site (which is mostly what I do), and there's the community side (which I'm not really into), and you have to be into both to make the site most useful. There's so much stuff there (much of it, yes, subpar) that it's hard to be noticed unless you really try. It might not be worth the effort. It depends.

And I feel I've probably said too much. *creeps out*

Ahh SYW, I see.

tehuti88: You make it sound like an evil cult...I had that vibe too. j/k Well thanks for the feedback. Unless anyone else has anything to add, I think I'll steer clear, I don't need any more free time sucking websites.

Once I finish my short story I'll probably go and get some feedback, but it is still a work in progress for now. When you say "CC" are you talking about comments and critique or somewhere in particular?

I registered with writing.com a while ago but to be honest I haven't really done anything with it. Mainly the reason is this place. I love the layout here and the people are great. A lot of talented writers post here and there is a ton of great advice to be had. I just didn't need another site.
