I am a huge fan of JUNOT DIAZ. I read him when I was in college. The stories in his DROWN collection made me teary-eyed. But he can also be very funny. He's published little since his collection. He's suffered from a lot of writer's block. But some great stories by him have been published in THE NEW YORKER. You can find some of these stories reprinted in various BEST AMERICAN SS. Check out NILDA, OTRA VIDA OTRA VEZ, THE BRIEF WONDROUS LIFE OF OSCAR WAO. This last one seems like a breakthrough for him. I believe he is expanding it into a novel; MIT, where he teaches, says that he's on leave.
