Intrigue-Less

Part of my plot is going to be a mystery. The problem is that I’m not very good at intrigue. I'm thinking that a previous employee of my MC’s took offense at being fired from a grooming position, but I am not entirely sure what for. I’m thinking he was smoking in the barn and was caught, but I’m not sure. It seems REALLY obvious if it is the former employee, but I'm not sure who else might have done it. I need a motive (is being fired enough motive?) and an ability to cause problems. I know that the culprit eventually sets a fire in the barn, but I need a couple other things that he can do to cause problems for the farm. Any suggestions?

If this ex-employee really loved his job, that would certainly be motive enough for him to do some small damage as payback. On the other hand, if you want him to be a bit of a psycho (or a lot more of one, for that matter), he could kill off some farm animals. The more nuts he is, the more gruesome the remains could appear. However, if you only want him to be a vengeful ex-employee, he could sabotage the tractor, put sugar in the gas tank of the owner's car, etc. There's no limit to the mischief (or mayhem, again depending on his nutiness) that you can cause on a farm. Not that I have first hand experience, you understand!
