I think this is a pretty good and informative piece of data, actually, despite its 'age'.

I would like to propose that it be made a 'sticky', and serve as part of the NF books forum permanent resources.

Thanks.

Cool. Glad it's helpful. I'll sticky it, and will try to add links to other contracts when I remember where I saw 'em. ;)

Did you happen to find links to any other contracts, or can I find any on other threads?

The Simon & Schuster advance sounds awfully nice! Would you be able to give an approximate $ range on a one book deal with a small publisher? Thanks.

Does anyone know of any sites that may have more examples of contracts for fiction and non-fiction publications?

Thanks,

Thanks, Jenna. It was interesting to read the contract even if I didn't understand some of it. I hope one day I'll get a contract like that one. I think S&S might be a good market for my book about life stories.

That's a really helpful, and unique, catch. My contract had some different elements, but it was good to see another example.

Oh My GAWSH!! I"m going to be so filthy rich when they buy my book!! I can hardly wait. This is going to be so sweet, $300,000.00. I'll pay off all my debts and have enough left over for some PEZ, with the cool dispensers.

Thanks for this information. It gives me a very sweet piece of pie in the sky to dream of and lots of legal mumbo jumbo to turn my brain to mush and cause anal leakage. I really had no idea it was such a big deal. I've had mortgages with less detail.

Thanks again. I'm learning so much. My brain hurts.

I wish I had seen this before I signed my non-fiction contract. The negotiations would have had a completely different flavor.

On an unrelated note, in a legal document that contains 108 independent clauses, it's funny how the human mind automatically gravitates towards the most important one first :).
