Rain. It's a great theme for a song, no? So many great songs incorporate it; many use it as a principal theme and even in their title.

Why is that? What about this mundane, everyday occurence makes it such a great theme for great songs?

What are your favorite rain songs?

How can one vote against "Singin' in the Rain" -- especially having seen the film?

Zeppelin's "Rain Song" must rate a podium position, even though I don't recall it being much about rain.

I'd tack on "Rain" by Tones On Tail (Bauhaus spin-off), recognising that it's somewhat obscure. But it does sound very dank, drippy and moist.

Feel free to tack on anything you so desire, Supra Moderatus...

Poor word choice on my part, O Whiggly one. I meant in no way to impugn your wide-ranging and comprehensive selection.

What about-

Kathy's Song
Paul Simon, 1965

I hear the drizzle of the rain
Like a memory it falls
Soft and warm continuing
Tapping on my roof and walls

And from the shelter of my mind
Through the window of my eyes
I gaze beyond the rain-drenched streets
To England where my heart lies

My mind's distracted and diffused
My thoughts are many miles away
They lie with you when you're alseep
And kiss you when you start your day

And a song I was writing is left undone
I don't know why I spend my time
Writing songs I can't believe
With words that tear and strain to rhyme

And so you see I have come to doubt
All that I once held as true
I stand alone without beliefs
The only truth I know is you

And as I watch the drops of rain
Weave their weary paths and die
I know that I am like the rain
There but for the grace of you go I

(I also love the eva cassidy remake)

No, no. I'm not complaining or being snappy. I'm saying that you can add to the poll, if you want to. I'm happy for there to be more choices and I don't suffer from poll-envy. :D

you martyr and shine.
Prayers for Rain - The Cure Disintegration.

you fracture me
your hands on me
a touch so plain
so stale it kills
you strangle me
entangle me
in hopelessness and
prayers for rain

Not necessarily my favorite, but the first thing that came to mind was Here Comes The Rain Again, by The Eurythmics

Acid Rain by Liquid Tension Experiment - From one of my "writing music" CDs.

Raining Blood by Slayer and Euope After the Rain by Kreator - Two for those that like their rain heavy.

I Love a Rainy Night by Eddie Rabbit - Sorry, forgot this was meant to be for favourite rain song.

Love Reign O'er Me by The Who - It might be "Reign" in the title and the chorus, but throughout the verses there is a lot of "rain". And it's a great song.

I gotta rep you for bringing up LTE, Cletus. How about Phil Collins I Wish It Would Rain Down? (I can't believe I beat Chunky C to a Phil Collins reference!)

Why? Dunno. :D

Maybe because sadness, next to love, is one of the most powerful emotions and rain seems to evoke that?
