Cool technology, but it'll never replace eye-to-eye contact and light conversation with the author, in person, no talkies, no remote pen. At least not for me. Signing isn't about getting the actual signature, it's about seeing and briefly interacting with the author.

Maryn, who likes Lawrence Block even more because he treats every fan like a person

In the toidy.
It certainly seems cold and impersonal to me, like "phoning it in". No way to win friends and influence readers.

It may be nonsense, JAR, but it was invented by the Canadian author Margaret Atwood, and so as a matter of patriotism I find it most impressive. Besides it'll never actually replace in person signings, so I think it's just kind of neat!
