Hi.

I'm an aspiring writer living in Brazil, and I have this idea that I CAN become a writer in a language that is not native to me. I figure if Joseph Conrad did it, why can't I, right? I might be wrong, but only time will tell.

I'm also a musician and a painter. Yes, I do spread myself too thin, I know; that's one of my problems. I have a BA in English Language and Literature, but remain unpublished; probably because I haven't actually written much.

I'm to learn enough from you guys to get my career going (preferrably in the right direction). I'll be visiting the beta reader thread too, in case anyone wants a foreigner's opinion on their writing.

Good luck with your writing :) I have a few friends, who write in English even though it is not their primary language.

Behind you!
It's nice to have you join us, Addy. That dream of publishing in a language not native to you can happen. I don't know how many copies of "Almost Adam" I've bought as gifts--and to make the point that its author, Petru Pompescu, spent years working on his English until it was good enough. Your message reads smoothly already, so you have a super-solid base already.

Maryn, pleased to meet you

Thanks for the warm welcome, guys. I feel at home already.

Maryn: Petru Pompescu huh? Haven't heard of him. I had a Romanian buddy in college. I messed around with a bunch of different languages around then - French, German, Italian, Japanese and Spanish were all optional subjects for students of English - but Romanian was out of my reach since I didn't have material to study even on my own. I could have at least learned a few cuss words with my class mate, but that too slipped my mind in those busy days.

For English being your non-native language, you write very well. Welcome to AW!
