That whole Superman death really made an impact, didn't it?

There really was nothing you could have done. Doomsday would have crushed you like the puny human you are. And wearing that armband wouldn't have prevented the curious, ill-conceived, energy-based Krytonian thing that happened.

We laugh to hide the pain.

On the inside we're crying, getting those thick runny nose-candles and are dropping to our knees, raising our arms to the brooding rain-clouds, swelling aboves and crying, "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!"

And I think that's a testament to the symbol the character is. It could also be the way he "died" as well. Take Superman. he goes down swinging, doing what he does, saving innocents and makes the ultimate sacrifice. By comparison, Cap goes out like a punk. Then there's the "realistic" aspect that we could all get shot but chances of us going down to a genetically engineered behemoth are pretty slim.

The James Bond effect I think. Sean Connery is James Bond. Everyone who followed merely played Bond. Roger Moore did more movies, but Connery is Bond. And it's not even like you could say, "Well, John Stewart was the GL when I started reading so he's my fave." Because if you get into a long standing book, you'll go get back issues and see why that characters stayed around so long and like the original.

Batman has gone through many incarnations in his character. From a variant on the TV series, all the way through to lone, nigh-insane thug, and all points in between. Different creatives come in with different takes on the character.

Me either. The serum and/or mutant thing I suggested would work well within the continuity, but let's be honest, they can pull some kinda half-a$$ed idea and write it, and folks will buy it.
