I have a question about ping backs and 'hat tips'. Don't get me wrong, I love having traffic directed to my site, however I made a posting on one of my blogs and someone commented on the posting by listing a link back to their own blog basically expanding on the posting, without actually mentioning my blog anywhere within their post. Below their posting my original blog posting is listed as a 'hat tip'. What does that mean?

Right now I feel as though this person has advertised their blog using my comment area. I know that we all do that when we make comments but this is not via their signature but via an actual link to an article and nothing more than that, almost like spam.

I would think that instead of just listing a link to your own article in the comment section that you should write your own post, saying it was inspired or whatnot by posting on [insert name and link to blog]. Otherwise it just (to me) comes across as kind of rude. I'm not trying to be too sensitive here I just don't feel that this person went about this the right way. I feel as though I've been used to a degree (even though their blog is in my links section on both of my blogs - with no recipricol link back or expected - isn't that enough?). I'm almost tempted to delete the comment save for the 'hat tip' label on their blog back to mine.

There are a lot of people that go from Blog to Blog and put only the links to their on blogs in the comment area as a comment to try and get the backlink. They usually try it on a post embedded somewhere in the archives, and hope that you dont have Moderation turned on and will never notice it.

simply put..I get that sometimes, and if it is just a link I don't publish the comment. One of the reasons to use the Moderation + Captcha features.

i haven't seen that on a blog. i don't use moderation but i get an email any time there is a comment so i can immediately delete it if i don't like it. if i start getting more comments or i get those backlinks appearing regularly i will definitely turn moderation on LOL
