Cross-Genre Works

Hello,

I have a question concerning cross-genre works. I write mostly Fantasy, and am new to the Erotica genre. My question is: are novels/novellas that are both erotic and fantastical in nature acceptable to the Erotica scene?

The reason I ask is, I have always wanted to blend the erotic into a Fantasy work, or vice-versa.

Also, how would I go about making such a blended manuscript, if it does turn out to be acceptable? Is there a formula I have to follow, or do I just write what I want to write and worry about all that stuff later?

I don't know whether it's acceptable or not... but if it's not, it should be. It would certainly interest me to both read and write it. Which makes me wonder... is it acceptable in Paranormal? Historical? I mixed it in with both my Historicals - which might be why they've not found a home!

Just check out a copy of Romantic Times. They have reviews for erotica in it, and yes, there are fantasy entries, as well as science fiction.

There is plenty of fantasy erotic but I recommend adding romance and aiming for urban or paranoraml rather than high fantasy. Of course quite a lot of erotic content can be added without having to leave the fantasy shelves (Laurell K Hamilton etc)

I'll second this except add that historical or faux-historical fantasy erotic romance is the popular category most related to high fantasy.

The fantasy erotica I've seen the most is vampires (gah so overdone!), werewolves and other shapeshifters, precognitive dreams, witch or gypsy magic, druidic magic especially involving standing stones, mages/sorcerers (often misunderstood outcast heros), psychic bonds with animals, mind-switch stories or two minds trapped in the same body stories.

If your really intrested in the fantasy/ Erotica check out Changling Press. The publish mostly erotic fantasy, Sci fi, etc. at least from what I can tell. I'm looking into them myself and will let you know more when I find out.

Also may I suggest 6 very good books in that genre which got me started. The Kushiel Series By Jacqueline Carey which was actual published by TOR. And the Beauty books by Anne Rice.

My January WCP novel is an erotic romance about elves, set in an elf world about to go to war. So, yes. There are quite a few erotic fantasies, I can't think of an erotic pub who doesn't do them.

Right on. Thank you all kindly for your help. I was hoping there would be some erotic works within the kind of Fantasy that I write. It's good to know that several publishing houses do work with that.

This gives me a new confidence that maybe some of my ideas would be suitable for publication, depending of course upon the house.

Lots of cross-genre erotic romance out there. I'm in small press because I write m/m and tend to write novella length, but even so I've had no problem getting my sf and fantasy with an erotic romance plot published. In fact, my publisher specifically focuses on cross-genre.
