Last night, I watched (on TCM) a documentary on the making of Gone with the Wind. What did I learn from it? Perseverance.

The book itself took ten years to write and the author (Margaret Mitchell) really had no intentions of having it published. It seemed providence stepped in and, quite by accident, someone from Macmillan asked to see the manuscript and the rest is history.

The trials and tribulations of making the movie was the main focus of the program. There were more roadblocks in making the film than one could imagine.

If you have a chance to watch it, please do. It may be a good lesson about perseverance for frustrated authors.:)

IMHO, perseverance is overrated, if it's of the "throwing lemmings off the cliff to see which ones make it to Jamaica" kind. Better to learn your craft.

Perseverance and talent/skills are not mutually exclusive. Just because you are great at what you do doesn't mean you don't need to persevere. Steven Spielberg comes to mind (it take a LONG time for some of his projects to go through...)

perseverance

Perseverance without talent isn't going to get you anywhere. But talent without perseverance isn't likely to take you very far, either.

I watched it. They did pick the right people for the parts.

I also enjoyed Margaret Mitchell's reply when asked if she'd come to Hollywood by O'Sullivan to be a consultant.

She said.

"Hardly,I wrote the book. You bought the movie rights."

She did her part, and they could do theirs if they so desired.

I don't know what that means, but the mental image is astonishing.
