Periods of History
From your perspective of the historical fiction (and non-fiction) you've read, what are the least represented periods of history in the world, Europe, the US, etc. and what are the most overworked? What would you like to read about and haven't found a book on the subject? What have you seen too much of?
For least represented, I'm not sure what I'd suggest. On the overworked, I think I'd suggest the French Revolution and the US Civil War. I think I'd like to read more about the Dark Ages (but not fantasy type), post Roman Europe, pre-colonization Americas, and ...

I believe the war of 1812 is wholly overlooked as is the french and indian wars of prerevolutionary america. A lot is written about the civil war, which I dont mind, but some of it is very bad and not entirly accurate. I would also like to see more on eastern u.s. native american tribes.

i'd definitely say the romantic period between regency and victorian. everyone can recognize empire waists as regency and bustles as victorian, but most people don't know what women wore in the 1830s and 40s (pelerines, 'shorter' dresses and big puffy sleeves).
like other go-against-the-grain types, i have chosen this difficult-to-research time period to write my book in. go figure
i will also agree that there is a lot of misinformation regarding the war of 1812. as a canadian, it's always a riot when americans give me that blank stare when i mention we, along with the british, burned down their white house and essentially "won" the war.

Bustles?
Interesting, 1830-40 for bustles. I always place bustles as Edwardian. They weren't those things we called bumrolls were they?
RE the 1812. Yes, and on that history as you see it note of course George Washington is not a hero in Canada.

Stories about pre-Ming Chinese dynasties are quite rare. It's hard for westerners to write about life in ancient China because language and cultural differences add extra layers of difficulty to research of the historical eras.
