I thought it would be appropriate to offer the following as "Success" of sorts. Each writer seeks their own plateau of what constitutes being successful. As some of you are aware I am concentrating on the future of the Internet and its potential for ebooks and publishing. With the permission of the sender I would offer this:

From Susan Kestella, Reception Coordinator for the Ohio Reformatory for Women.

"I have to share with you that every Tuesday, as I deliver my orientation speech to my newly arrived prisoners, I share a part of you and Mr. Sprouse. I remember reading in one of the early chapters something I found to be so profound. It was the comment about sanity. 'To go sane, you have to want sanity more than you want insanity'. Certainly not to make anyone think that mental illness is a choice, but its about wanting something more than you want something else. I relate this to the prisoners when I ask how many of them want to return to prison after release. Its all about wanting to stay out more than coming back. Wanting to stay "out" more than sex, money, drugs, alcohol, relationships, or what ever. It really hits home and never fails bringing tears to some eyes. So, please know that your writing is reaching those in need, in an indirect way, but please know that I mention you and the name of your book to preface that part of my orientation."

"Tell me what you think of this? I am thinking of having "story time" where I narrate the chapters to my prisoners ... in an hour long program each week until we get through the book, then start all over again with a new set of inmates......"

Peace,
Susan

To me, the author, THIS is my kind of success! I offered Hallelujah Crazy as a free read/download on the net and to find it might actually help someone in a tiny way makes it all worth the effort. I just wanted to let others know we each have the ability to affect someone else with our writings, and not all of us seek the monetary factors above the rest. Thanks

To me, the most important type of success is personal satisfaction. The second is acceptance of something you have to share/offer, by others. From there, success gets very specific, and thus less universal. dl, it sounds like you have found those two important ones (likely more), and I'll be the first to give you a hearty contrats. I hope your gifts are appropriately appreciated. They are from here.

Absolutely! To have someone personally tell you they were changed, motivated, inspired, or any manner of positive emotional outburst by your work is fantastic. Sure, we all want to receive a little cash for our work. When you put your heart and soul into a project getting paid is a wallet-enriching reward but nothing to the personal gratification as you posted. Bravo!

I apologize if I missed a link, etc. , but I'd love to see the publication Susan is referencing. I'm intrigued.

It's great when someone takes the time to tell you how much they like your work.

Neurofizz, Pike & Nancy: Thank you for your response. I hesitated about posting it as I wasn't sure it 'fit the bill' as a goal/success factor, but it is a 'success' to me in my goals - so I posted. In my younger years I went after the money at all costs, usually costing me more than the money I was after - in my elderly years I am paying back in a few ways.

Neurofizz: I am looking forward to "Phoenix" - I love historical westerns.

Nancy - "Link" - isn't any actually, other than my website at http://www.dlcharles.com and I hope it is self-explanatory. It is an authorized biography of Arnett Wayne Sprouse, titled "Hallelujah Crazy".

success is subjective, and to me, as long as YOU think it is a success, then it is!
