Currently I am spending more time on forums and online then writing. I really am no longer writing new things :/... Thus I am going to take a AW break. Be back soon everyone, it's time to go be a writer and write!

If you only started writing in February....but, yes, the internet can be a distraction.

I'm sure many folk find the same but prefer to discipline themselves to go on-line at specific times and for no more than 1 hour or whatever.

The disciplined approach may be preferable to 'taking a break' which suggests the same old routine will come back after the break period is over.

But good luck- and happy writing, although if you're taking a break I doubt you'll see this response, eh? :poke: :Hug2:(We'll be able to tell, you know)

I'm a fan of the 12 step program.

Step 1: Check out AW.

Step 2: Check out my other forums.

Step 3: See what's up on Facebook. Start a political argument with someone.

Step 4: Think about writing.

Step 5: But first, go see if there's anything new on AW.

Forget steps 6 to 12.

If going online too often is messing up your mojo, there are apps that can be updated to Google Chrome that throw you off after a set amount of time. It's very effective. :tongue

Not for me. I would go into the settings and extend my allotted time whenever it got close to ending. ^_^;;

I think just finding something that makes me feel productive (even if it's just cleaning house) helps. It breaks me out of that funk where I'm most likely to spend more time online than I need to.

I can totally understand the need to cut down on internet use in order to get more writing done. It can be a complete time-sink. Planning to do the same myself over the next few months.

See, you can't do that with this one. It locks the settings in. You can also engage 'nuclear mode', which makes you complete a task before you can even think about looking at your settings. And that task isn't half as easy as it looks. :tongue The only way to stop it is to uninstall it. (I use it for finals and paper writing times.)

Get a Kindle Fire HD or an Ipad and you will really be distracted from writing. I recommend it for anyone who follows Dangerous Bill's Twelve-steps-forget-steps-six-through-twelve Program. :)

There are times when I seriously have to unplug my network connection and then throw the cable behind my desk where I can't get to it without crawling on the floor.

So I hear ya. :) Happy writing!

I regularly turn off the wireless AirPort on my laptop so that I'll stop going online. At least AW is more productive (it's about writing; it's almost like you're writing) than Facebook.

posting here means I'm writing

I wrote for 3 hour this morning. Time for a break. After I write for another 2.

You need breaks.

I have a semi-in-touch plan.

  • The only writing site I visit (ever) is AW
  • I avoid all political arguments on the web, unless something comes up that addresses university-related issues and it is obvious the poster needs a dose of reality
  • I come to AW only 2-5 times a day and usually spend less than 20 minutes or so per visit (unless I vomit a long post or two)
  • I don't join a thread if someone else has already said what I would like to say. Exceptions - if I have something to add, or if I feel so strongly about an issue I want to add my support to the opinion of another member or members.
  • If a few days go by and I haven't visited AW, I don't get upset. I have my priority list of time commitments, and AW never reaches the top of that list. It never eclipses the kids or my day job, and those two are of maximum importance and my two top joys in life (#3 is writing, which also demands time away from the web).
  • Just as writing requires self-discipline, so does putting limits on a web presence.

Seems like the OP is already suffering from withdrawal symptoms.:D

However, yes, I understand completely. Forums and the Net in general are a MAJOR distraction. Reminds me of the cartoon where someone's sitting at the computer and his wife/girlfriend yells out, "Come to bed, already!"

"I can't. Someone's wrong on the Internet!"

If spending too much time here or anywhere else is a distraction, get off, do your writing, live life, and come back when ready. JMO...

(But if you're really not surfing the Net, you won't see this message;))

I can understand completely about having the internet distracting you from the writing projects a person may have. I find myself sitting down intending to work on my WIP and end up checking out a few sites I frequent. So good luck on your break I hope you get the writing done that you have planned.
thanks
