Japan to the U.S. in 1960?

In my story, I need for two characters to travel from Japan to the United States in the year 1960.
I've tried searching the web, but couldn't really find anything helpful.
Not sure if air travel was an option back then for that great a distance?
Maybe a ship over the ocean?
It is a fantasy story, so maybe I should just have them transport here magically, but I want to weigh both options before I decide.
