Greetings fellow horror-writers.

I looking for some advice on publishers in the dark arts.

I plan to have some of my novels translated into English, and would like to start at the top and work my way down.

So ... any advice on major houses that likes horror?

I found Blood Bound Books, which seems nice, but rather small.

It's kind of a broad question, actually. Most major publishers will take horror, but there aren't as many that deal in horror exclusively. One of the stickies here has a list of horror markets, which are mostly magazines and other small presses, as opposed to book publishers.

If you're interested in ebooks, the best publishers out there (IMO, naturally) are Musa and Samhaim, both of which have horror imprints, both of which have taken on work from writers in this very forum.

There's also Damnation Books, which is exclusively horror, and also has taken work from writers in this very forum; however, I think their formatting is really sloppy and hard to read.

With print books, all of the Big 5 have a horror/spec fic imprint, but with those you're better off finding an agent to get you in the door.

All that said, I have zero experience in getting existing books translated. Is there a reason you aren't working with whoever published your books in the original language?

Thank you :)

Who are the Big 5?

Yeah, they don't really have any expertise in the English market. The Danish market is tiny (we are only 5,5 million Danes in the world), so the cost of translation and hassle of opening a new market is really a huge deal to them, when they sell less than a thousand copies pr. title in Danish.

They did e-publish four of my English short stories, but that was i December. Now, in May, they still havent managed to get the titles available on Amazon.com. :-/

So I can either wait for a smash hit to carry the day, or nut up and be proactive. (I started out selfpublishing, so I'm not afraid to do things myself.) :)

The Big 5 are MacMillan, Simon & Schuster, Hachette, Harper Collins, and Random Penguin House or whatever they're calling themselves now. (They merged last year--I can't remember the new name.)

Still, with translations, eh. . . See, technically, that's a reprint, I think. And not all of them are groovy with reprints, particularly if they don't know how well it's going to sell. I'd just do a search for "translations + reprints + publishers/agencies" or something like that.
