Hey everyone,

I'm looking for some recommendations for books to use to teach my students how to write a mystery and how to write suspense.

I need them to be short enough that I can read them within about 20 minutes, so my search has been more focused on picture books, but short stories work too.

So far we've read Private I. Guana and A Dark Dark Tale. They've been a little bit young for my group of sixth graders (11 and 12 yo)...but I tell them we're reading as writers, not as readers, which lets me get away with younger stuff (but it can't be too young or I'll lose their attention).

Any suggestions for me please?

Encyclopedia Brown! that guy is a genius. Each chapter is a mystery. Check out Guys Read: Thrillers too. And maybe some of the good old Scar yStories to Tell In The Dark books would be good too. And Bruce Coville's short story anthologies, and A Feast For Hungry Ghosts.

Have to second Encyclopedia Brown - my fave!

Maybe Nate the Great? Lower MG reading level, but still super cute/funny.

How about 'I Want My Hat Back', by Jon Klassen? Yes, it's a picture book, and looks really simple, but it's cleverly done. There's a theft, and one visual clue, and the rest is in the dialogue.
