What's this site's attitude on fanfic? I'm really enthusiastic about it, but I don't want to discuss it if that isn't welcome.

If I can post about it, where? It wouldn't really be relevant for the business-themed subforums, but it seems like something that happens to be fanfic could be on-topic in many other subforums.

I don't think you're allowed to post fanfic here, and I haven't seen a lot of people talking about it, but I know there's a few fanfic authors.

Pretty sure this site is meant for original works though.

But then I'm fairly new too ;)

I've got links to my fanfic in my sig - maybe I'll leave at that, or post about it only occasionally.

I have some original fiction written, but I won't post links to it until I have more of it.

No fanfic on site. It's too big a liability for the site owner.

Okay, don't post the fanfic itself, but is it okay to talk about it in general?

Against forums rules to post it here. I'm not sure about talking about it, but my best guess is to just don't start, its nasty business for the site. K?

Still, why waste your time on fanfic? And even when you can't publish it without completely revising it to cut the connections away.

I understand that this site wants to avoid it, and why. Okay, I'll respect that.

Fanfic naturally came to me as a result of being a fan of the series in question. I feel I've developed general writing experience which should carry over to other material.

I do want to focus more on non-fanfic, so I can have something to publish (as you referred to) and act on some of my non-fanfic ideas. By the way, my non-fanfic ideas aren't just knockoffs.

However, I won't abandon fanfic, and a lot of the existing writing experience I can talk about comes from the fanfic I've already written.

For a fair number of people (including a good number of professional authors) it's a useful exercise for practicing their writing craft and/or just playing in a world they are fond of which doesn't happen to be theirs. It's only a waste of time if the person writing it learns nothing and doesn't have fun doing it. Which is pretty much true of writing original work too :)

Happens all the time, and then:

I quote myself from this fanfic thread from March:

Let's speed this up, shall we?

Fanfiction rocks!
No! Fanfiction stinks!
Fanfic is fun!
No! Fanfic is illegal!
I write it!
I won't ever!
I love it!
I hate it!
I'm flattered!
I'm offended!
You're stupid.
No, you're stupid.
So's your mother.
No, so's your mother.
Mac gets a headache.
Medi gets a bottle and some shots to start the AW fanfic drinking game.

*lock thread*

For the newbies, Mac is "MacAllister", the owner of Absolute Write, Medi is "Medievalist," the Admin who cleans up the messes the rest of us make.

You're welcome to talk about fan fic in general (i.e. not about your specific stories) but you can't post excerpts. Be aware that it is a sensitive subject.

At this point, we're fine with you linking to fanfic elsewhere in your sig, though please be aware that sigs are public and we do have some under 18 members.
