Computer? Pen and Paper? Typewriter?

For me I'm starting to embrace newer technology :) The vast majority of my writing is done on believe it or not....my smartphone :) With a Samsung Galaxy Note II, which has a HUGE screen for a phone, and before that the RAZR, which also had a huge screen.

Thanks to Dropbox I had cloud storage so everywhere I had access to my writing.

From mid October to mid November I was on a trip to China, which I found somewhat boring and there were times where I was at world famous monuments like the Great Wall and the Forbidden City, literally sitting down in the middle of the monument, writing my book.

I find that writing on the go is more productive since it literally cuts off distractions. Sitting in a Cafe (Dennys for me is a particularly favourite haunt) without any distractions is good for me. I now take also a small bluetooth keyboard and my phone with me.

My parents are coming back from Hong Kong with a Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet for me :) I already got my keyboard and I'm going to be doing a great deal of writing on that too.

I feel like this question is asked every week.

I will answer anyway. Write on my laptop. Edit on the desktop/ laptop. Most of my notes are done on my ipad now. Some notes go in my notebook.

I work on my couch with my cat running across me. I like the silence, but I will also work with the tv on. I just go quicker in silence.

I write on my flash drive. I back up to my hard drive once a week. I back up to my external hard drive once a month. And I recently started use box to sync to the cloud.

I get paranoid on my backups :)

I use Dropbox.com as my main drive, but I also use Google Drive for a backup and Box.com as an additional backup!

Home on my desktop in my study. I do take some notes on paper, but I much prefer being able to quickly fix errors and move blocks of text around. I'm always amazed to hear about people writing on smartphones. Mine has a keyboard that is so tiny and so annoying to use. Even capitalizing words or inserting punctuation more complex than a period is a challenge.

I backup with an external drive and on dropbox too.

Used to write on my desktop using Microsoft Word, now I primarily use Scrivener on my Macbook and upload to the cloud to ensure I have access to wherever I am.

Usually my desktop, in my room, with Word 2010. (WriteWay Pro if it's a novel, but lately it's been mostly Word.)

When cats and/or relatives prove too distracting, and if it's light enough not to break my neck on the stairs, I grab my laptop and head out to my workshed. Still Word 2010. (If I can't get away from people, I just have to write in my head. Oddly enough, I write a lot of characters who have bad, bad things happen to their pushy relatives... ;))

I back up nightly onto a flash drive, weekly onto a second flash drive, and every few months onto an external hard drive. (I'm one of those throwbacks who still doesn't 100% trust the internet when it comes to keeping my personal info safe...)

On the laptop. In bed. In the dark. And the silence. Mostly between the hours of 8pm and midnight so I don't have to deal with children.

I write using my laptop. Usually, I'm sitting on the couch in my family room because it's comfortable. I have a cushioned board that I sit on my lap, and the laptop sits on top of that board.

When I was in college, I wrote from the desk in my dorm room and occasionally in a cafe that was part of our library.

Macbook, in bed, with Kharma stretched out snoozing away, sometimes balancing a glass of red wine.

I do almost all my writing on my laptop now. When I first started I HAD to write on paper then type it into the computer. I still use paper when I have to, but it's rare now. One time I wrote a first draft in a hotel room on those tiny note pads the leave by the phone!

Lately I've been writing in the evenings since I don't have a car and there's not much to do here after dark anyway. But in the past I've been able to write whenever and wherever I had the time and inspiration.

I use a USB flash drive for my backups (note to self: back up my files today). Google drive would be great, I just keep forgetting it's an option.

On a bog standard computer in my writing room. (I can't call it a study or office). Door shut, music on and away I go.

I tend to draft longhand, then write it into the computer. I was partial to using the barebones full-screen program Darkroom before I discovered Scrivener. Now I hardly use anything else. OpenOffice Write is for editing.

Desk computer in my home office, laptop in my recliner chair, in bed, on the couch, or in the chaise lounge on my screened porch. Pad and pen when away from computers. Mini tape recorder when driving long distances.

In other words, whatever is available when I get the time and have the desire to work on a project.

Macbook in bed, at the end of kitchen bar, in my favorite plush, bedroom chair. I wallow all over my house with my Mac. No music, no TV, no pets or children.:D

Life is good!

I work 1-9 monday to friday with no computer access, so for most of the week I write in a notebook during breaks then transfer to my laptop when I get home. On the weekends I use my laptop, usually in the living room because if I'm in my room I tend to get lazy and just not write.

I write by hand on half sheets on A4 which then all go into an envelope for safe keeping. I find it's easier for me because I can write whenever and wherever I want. I also have an annoying habit of deleting whole sections when I used to write on a computer, so at least on paper I can still see what I've crossed out. :)

Desktop computer in my living room office. Laptop when I'm away from home. Comp books and notepads for notes. Save to Dropbox & main hard drive which backs itself up regularly to an external drive.

Mostly pen and paper. Most often in my office when the weather is bad, but many other places when the weather is good. On the patio, out in the park, in the deep woods, at the library, and often in a local redneck bar. Just wherever strikes my fancy on a given day.

I do sometimes use a 1949 Royal Easy Touch manual typewriter, when I can find good cotton ribbons.

When I was young and didn't have my own computer, I wrote everything longhand in a notebook. Now, I sit in bed, or on the couch, with my laptop. I tend to write for hours at a time, which can get uncomfortable if I'm at my writing desk. If I wake in the night with an idea, I'll jot it down on a memo pad or Post-It note. (Half of the time, it will still make sense in the morning.) Occasionally, I've written a (very short) scene on my iPhone, but that's only happened when I'm away from my laptop and NEED to get the scene written, because otherwise I'll forget.

I write with my brain. Stuff comes out my fingers, usually via a laptop. Where? Wherever... I'm partial to coffee shops & to my living room or desk, but I'm not restrictive.

My schedule only allows that I write at work. Usually after work, I'm too tired to have an interest in anything except sleep. Of course not many jobs pay you to entertain yourself, with the exception of a few minutes an hour.
It allows me about 10 hours a day to mull over details, or write a bunch.

Dinosaurs, Garages and Big Al

Back in the day, when is wasn't trying to avoid being consumed by a T. Rex or run down by a Triceratops, I would write on a yellow legal pad with a #2 Ticonderoga pencil. I was an over the road truck driver. I had very small work space that fit over the wheel. While waiting to load, unload or on breaks, I would write and write and write. Then I'd go home. I would sit in front of my typewriter to transcribe and edit what I'd written. This didn't work out well at all. I found that all those nifty characters and that spell binding plot were something between chicken tracks and an indecipherable code. Alas! My penmanship would have to be graded as an"F-". I think this has something to do with the fact that I hold a pencil rather like I hold a pipe wrench.

In two or three blinks of the eye. I find myself in the seventh decade of my life and retired. Somewhere during those eye blinks along came the computer and word processor. With decent touch typing skills, I'm now able to write and edit with some success. Well, at least I can read what I've written before I decide whether or not to dump it in the recycle bin.

Where do I write? I now have an office in my two-car garage. The family flivvers are parked in the drive. I keep the overhead door open during the nine months of good weather we have in upstate South Carolina. So now I can write, chain smoke my pipes and get some fresh air. To be sure, I have no desire to endanger the lives of my grandchildren or the rest of my nonsmoking family with secondhand smoke. Another benefit of my open door policy allows me to spew forth intimidating loud profane protestations when the neighborhood dog walkers pause to let their canine companions crap on my lawn.

When do I write? I live what I like to call the "Al Capone Lifestyle". Big Al usually rolled out of the sack about noon and hit the hay at about 4:00 A.M. Me too! After a leisurely breakfast, my email and now a visit to this site, I get to it. I take frequent breaks, but always return.
