I know this sounds ridiculous, but I know there has to be a way to do this. I want the first half of the book to be readily accessible, and the second half to have some sort of block that only a password can open.

I'm doing this because I have two stories I'm publishing, one for kids and one for parents. Kids cannot be allowed to access the second story. And releasing two separate ebooks would be too complicated. I know there has to be a way to do this, I just don't know enough about coding to do it myself. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Can I ask why you want to do this? I can see no technical, promotional or logistical reason why.

Chop it into to separate editions. Part 1 free, and if you want to read the end, part 2 for money.

You opened another thread to ask this, so I'll say what I said there:

There is no way to do this to an epub or mobi file that I know of. The main platforms - Kindle, iBooks, Adobe - don't support it.

There are ebook authoring programs that do allow this, but the files they output will not work on those main platforms. They will work on personal computers, using proprietary software the user has to download specially.

You can password-protect a PDF or a zip or rar archive that contains an ebook file. This would be a fiddly and annoying way to distribute an ebook.

If you have two books and one of them is not suitable for children, you are going to have to distribute them separately. You may want to see if the major book platforms have parental control options built in - I have never seen them myself but if they do exist that might be an extra control you could make use of.

So he did! Thanks for the heads-up, Torgo.

krausjb, please don't start more than one thread about the same thing in future.

Locking this.
