Hi All, I am a filmmaker (writer/director), and have been forwarded the memoirs of a small town cop. This came through a mutual friend. The memoirs are rough and unfinished, but the writer can sure tell a story. At a certain point he was an SVU detective while battling a full-scale sexual addiction of his own. The writer is painfully honest, and holds nothing back. His stories fall into the "you can' t make this stuff up" category.

I was forwarded these memoirs because our mutual friend thought that because I work in film I might "know people" that could help in getting these memoirs published. I am not of the literary world at all, but do know one lone book agent to whom I sent the material and am waiting to hear back. Again, the material is rough and raw and needs editing and guidance. Unfortunately I am unqualified to provide the writer with either.

My submission to the agent was informal, and we know each other, so that's one thing. But if the agent passes, then the writer would like to go out to other agents, but is clueless how to do so. I would love to be of help in that endeavor but don't have the know-how or time.

Here is my question: I think this writer needs another "real" writer to assist him in all of this. I know that there are ghostwriting services, but that is a lot of upfront cash that the writer does not have. What would be the best way to get another writer to help this brave former cop to help him get his memoirs out there with no cash up front? Should he offer 50/50 split of any monies and co-credit? And where would he post that notice, here? On this site? Someplace else? Any advice/comments are enormously appreciated.

Cheers!

JLM, if your friend wants to come here and ask these questions himself, I'm sure he'd get good advice.

The problem is that he doesn't really need you to help him with this so your acting as a go-between isn't going to be useful, and as if you'd want to be paid for your efforts, it's going to be costly too.

There's no need for him to work with a ghostwriter at this stage: a good one is expensive (I know, I've ghosted several books), and without a publishing deal in place it's an expense he might not make back.

If your friend's book is as good as you suggest it is, he should be able to find a good literary agent who will guide him towards his best options.

If you really want to help him, suggest that he finds out how to submit to agents, and does that work alone.

You get what you pay for. Honestly, a writer who would basically ghost an entire book for free (the promise of potential future profits when there's no guarantee of any future profits is for free) may be a great writer who knows how to construct a book, develop characters, pacing, judiciously edit, etc., but I'd hardly bet on it.

Why not have him work on/finish his memoirs and then query agents?

Have your writer friend roam around this site for awhile, looking carefully at the Ask the Agent section and also Query Letter Hell (which can only be accessed by members). He can post short sections of the memoir in the Memoir and Bio section of SYW (which can also only be accessed by members) for critique. Possibly he could ask around in either the Beta Reader section or the Memoir and Bio section (right here where you've posted) for a beta reader or mentor to help with the niceties of writing. But he'll have to do it himself.

Blessings,

Thanks very much for your responses. I will indeed steer my new friend to this site. Siri, your game-plan for this gentleman sounds like a great start. Again, thank you all.
