A master is gone at the age of 69. Called the British Stephen King, they both debuted in the same year - 1974 - thus one could say that King is the American Herbert with equal success. Only their successes were not equal, that's why. Herbert and his puny 54 million books sold and mere four films made:)

Writing-wise, the man forever remained on a mid-1970's King structure level, with early-1980's Koontz prose. Which, for someone like me, is a fantastic treat.

Who can fill his shoes?

Who will fill all their shoes - the masters who are sixty and seventy as we speak? Lots of small genre talent around, but does anyone see a giant of their stature in the making? Even 'young hopes' like Clive Barker and Robert Mccammon are suddenly sixty.

Time.

Anyway, RIP, Mr. Herbert.

While I haven't read all Herbert's works by a long shot, I've read enough to know he was vastly talented. He'll be missed.

Maryn, seeing the greats drop too quickly

A dark, evil place.
Another thread about it here. I'll leave this one for a bit in Horror then merge them later.
