Random Loveswept amending contract terms!

For those of you who didn't know, Romance Writers of America, along with Horror Writers and SFWA, has been actively taking Random House to task for their latest contract, which required monetary contribution by authors for "promotion" and less than acceptable contract terms.

Random put up this press release today.

Whether or not you agree with everything RWA does, they did good today...

I did wonder, when I first saw this, why their e-royalty is so low.

Still looks like a pretty poor deal to me. And only modifying the original really awful contract to a slightly less awful one because of bad publicity and general outrage doesn't reassure me they are acting in good faith. I'd assume that if forced to not screw the writer in one way, they'll find another way to do it.

Yeah RWA sent out this alert:

Random House Adjusts Contract Terms for Digital Imprints

In response to discussions with writers groups regarding contract terms for their new digital imprints, Random House is adjusting proposed terms for authors with Hydra, Alibi, Loveswept, and Flirt.

According to Random House, prospective authors will be offered two models under which to publish: “profit share” or “advance plus royalty.”
As always, RWA cautions members to perform due diligence before assigning rights to any party.
