My big 110 lb. mostly Lab Duke, passed his CGD (Canine Good Citizen) test yesterday so now his going to be a therapy dog!!! I'm so happy and excited. This is a dog who is happiest being petted, kissed, stroke and loved so I know he'll be great. We have a local organization called Furry Friends that makes visits to schools, nursing homes, retirement homes, the hospital - all those fun places. Can't wait to get started.

That's awesome! Congrats to both of you. You will love doing the therapy visits...I used to do them with my Lab and they were so rewarding!

Congrats! Great work :)

Does the organization you're going to be working through only require a CGC or do they require further certification, like TDI?

Two of my past critters (Bear, an Akita/GSD rescue and Gonzo, my giant blue cat) were therapy animals, through the University of Tennessee's HABIT program. They loved going and it was wonderful to see the good they did for people. We were assigned to a runaway shelter and a sanctuary house for abused women and children. I'm sure you'll be enriched by the experience :)

Congratulations to you and Duke! I bet my lab would love the attention, but he's really not a very good citizen - not if there's any food around!

The group is called, Furry Friends and they only require a CGC but, the animal has to do three visits before he get's his official vest (and me too!).

That's great :) Really, sometimes that's all that's needed, knowing the animal can handle all the extra stimulus without being unpleasantly stressed. Probably not the "correct" attitude, but I'm not known for that. ;)

Not lame at all Carlene! I just need to learned how to do it myself!

Thread derail: ETA: I figured out how to post photos. I signed up with Photobucket. Easy-peasy to sign up for their free storage and upload a photo. Then, make sure you read AW's policy on uploading photos. In Photobucket, click on the links that are on the right of the photo (the "click" saves the information) ETA: I clicked on the "Direct Link" button. Then in the AW thread, click on the "Insert Image" button to insert the photo. I did it in this thread for the first time (I know, it's lame).

I understand we can get an account with places like Photobucket--a photo hosting site--for free. Then upload the photo to that site. Then in AW, we can insert a photo here in our post. If others know a better way of explaining it, please do so. I'd hate to give her wrong info (and confuse myself).

End thread derail.

Returning now to the real story.

Grrrrr - obviously not that easy, Snowstorm! I got the image at photobucket, read the AW rules and.....nope, no go. As you can see from the above empty message I did something wrong.

I'm in the midst of making dinner (damn cook quite and the housekeeper doesn't do cooking - yes that's a joke) so after we dine, I'll see if my computer guru AKA my husband, can help. After all, he's the smart one - I'm the pretty one.

I'm glad you at least got to put him in your avatar! Doesn't he just want to make you cuddle up and snooze with him. Thank you for letting us see him!

Not to pester you, Carlene, but if you're interested in uploading that photo, I added some specifics in post #14 that should make it easy for you to upload a photo. (No, you sure don't have to upload a photo, but just in case you want to or just want to learn how.)

(In your post #15, the "http://" is in the link twice so it won't work, plus I think it's missing a front section ???

Awww, what a gorgeous dog. I'd love to join a scheme like that, if they have anything similar up in Scotland. My lab's too hyper for it, though -- he's still a fan of excitable puppy jumping up on people despite his size and strength.

How old is your Lab? You do know, I hope that Lab are brain dead and act like puppies until they're about four. Then one day, someone flips a switch and they are the most wonderful dogs in the world. BUT....that puppy stage can be trying!

Wow, that's awesome! Our dog will be four this coming June. He's not certified in anything, but if we had enrolled him in doggie school I think he would have made a great therapy dog and or police dog. Duke is a very handsome dog. How long did it take for him to receive his certificate?

I had no idea actually, thanks for that -- we rescued our boy out of the blue one day after a friend asked "my dad's work colleague is wanting to get rid of a labrador, are you interested?", so we didn't really get much time to prepare for life with a lab.

He's two years old, and completely well behaved apart from jumping up at unfamiliar visitors and growling at strange dogs if they approach me on our walks. There's a Pets as Therapy co-ordinator nearby so I might see if I can get him trained and ready. :)
